Musette Bag

I've been using a small musette bag for years now without knowing what on earth it was! It's about 10x10x4.5 (in)
It's VERY old, has a main compartment with a nylonish secondary pocket along the whole of the back wall. there is one outer side pocket, and the straps are designed to be used as a backpack (clip to D rings) but I've clipped them together to form a mesenger bag (sort of uncomfortable). There is a rear pocket perfect for holding a frizbee! The top flap closes via 2 straps that go through double-back fasteners (sorry, I can't think of the right term for those!) and there's an odd tab with two eye holes at the edge of the flap (maybe for fastening a canteen?)
Could someone fill me in on the use and history of these great little bags (mine is sorta falling apart, and I'd love to get a Mark VII or another musette!)
Cheers
