Mk VII substitute?

Several years ago I bought a South African shoulder bag from an Army surplus store and promptly forgot about it. One day I took a closer look and realized that it looked very similar to Jones' bag, the main difference being the additional pouches stitched to the side. However, they can be easily removed.

The top flap is almost identical to the Mk VII, with the exception of the buckle and strap closure--both easily removable. A trip to any craft or hardware store will supply you with the brass snaps and attachment tool to affix the snaps to the bag.

This is no replacement for an authentic Mk VII, but the HEAVY canvas construction cannot be matched by any other bag. Also, the strap attaches on the back of the bag instead of the sides, making it very comfortable to carry. I replaced the short web strap with a self-made strap cut down from some Old Navy belts and a British WWII-era brass buckle. Sorry I can't post pictures--that is far beyond my capabilities.

The bag is only US$13.00, so its a steal. And let me reiterate--there is no bag that can match its durability. If you want to check it out, click here:

AH I see what you mean, if the two side pockets were removed it would be really similiar. Looks like it also comes in O.D. also!
Nice find -

Regards, and welcome!
