Hey guys,

Does the type of hide effect at all the volume of the crack? For example, would the 8' EC whip that I want be louder than my 8' Keppler? Or is it the number of plaits and bellies? The Keppler has got 8 plaits, and I don't know how many bellies it's got... the EC I want has 12 plaits, and 2 bellies. Basically I'm wondering if this new bullwhip is going to be any louder than my Keppler, because if it is, I might need to find a new place to crack it.

I think that the volume of your crack depends more on which crack you use to crack the whip, how much force you use to crack the whip, the weight of the whip itself, and the size cracker that you have on the whip. For example, a heavy, thick cracker on a heavy bullwhip will make for a louder crack than a light, thin cracker placed on the same bullwhip and cracked in the same manner.

I also recommend that you read the section in Morgan's 2nd edition of Whips and Whipmaking on the dynamics of falls and crackers to get an idea of how you can make your whips crack with less volume.
