I was wondering why (and forgive me if this was brought up before) are there pleats going down his shirt? It can't be for more "action" I guess you can say, because the pleats are sewn on. If they were fuctional pleats, then there would be more material shown on the shirt for the added movement. When you think of it, the Costume is suppossed to be military, however I have never seen a military shirt of that design. Does any of this make sense????

They are more for design and visual interest on screen. Just a bit of flare.

Don't forget...
Adventure.
Seriously, I haven't found a historical example of an officer's uniform having these pleats. I would like to know where Noel got the idea. I think they look great.

I think this was brought up on the old COW once. If I recall someone suggested it may have been inspired by the guayabera (Gwai-Ah-Bear-Ah) shirt which is originally from Cuba and is more than 200 years old. It was designed by Spanish immigrants in Cuba in the 1800’s. At the Beginning of last century wealthy Cubans used to travel to the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico wearing Guayaberas and later the Guayabera shirt was adopted in Mexico. Usually made of crisp, lightweight silk, linen, cotton, or polyester which was and is still popular in tropical countries then and now, they come in various colors and many with fancy embroidered pleats and pearl buttons and some even had epaulets of sorts. The wearer usually tops off the shirt with a panama hat. There is a huge market for some of these vintage shirts if you check around.

I never knew the name for those shirts. Thanks.
I always thought those came really close. You can find them for so cheap where I live.
One problems is that they have the extra set of pockets and they are always short sleeve.

Okay, I get the pleat idea. But why not make them functional, like the pleats on the L.L. Bean shirt?

i agree with that thing about the desing that is similar to the Guayabera.
when Ireceived the Indy shirt my wife said " it's similar to the guayabera that my grandfader was taking "
