Can leather be ironed?

Post by cknight »

Can leather be ironed with a wet towel placed between the leather and the iron?
My goat has developed some wrinkles/creases around the top of the pleats that cause them to open up more that they did originally. I was hoping they could be ironed out or at least reduced.
My gut tells me the answer is no. It seems likes the amount of heat needed to affect the leather would damage it because of the thickness of the leather. But I thought I would ask and see if anyone has experience with this.

Thanks,
Chris

According to Peter, if you want to decrease wrinkles, just hang it up. the natural weight of the leather will get rid of the wrinkles. Not sure if it will work in your case though. :junior: -IJ

I was told by a leather repair shop that you can. I had a leather trench coat with a very unruly collar that stood straight out no matter how much you bent it back in place. He said put an iron on cotton setting and place the leather flat and cover it with a bath towel. On the cotton setting it will get hot enough to burn the leather through the towel so use caution and keep the iron moving and not in one place. It worked in that case and thecoat was a very stiff leather, pretty similar to my Wested goat.

I wouldn't... but that's just me and from my experience. But I'm also the kid who made Kerosene Jello out of Knox-Blocks and built small towns out of cardbord and sticks only to blow them up with blasting caps.

What about leaving it in a warm place with a very heavy tome (War and Peace should do) on top?

Although I do remember I tried straightening out the curl in a lambskin stormflap by folding it the right way and clipping clothes pegs on it for several weeks and it didnt work. If there was some other way of applying heat...

Or, you can use MY excuse when my wife chides me for wearing wrinkled clothing....just tell folks your jacket is NOT wrinkled....it's just your skin UNDERNEATH the jacket that's showing through.!  Regards. Michaelson

Thanks for the replies. Maybe I'll just live with it. They don't look that bad anyway.
But if the jacket starts to look like Michaelson, I may recondsider. :P
