Hello,

Here is a question for everyone. Is there a meeting place for whip enthusiasts in CT or Western MA?

I checked this site: http://whip.know-where.com/whip/

But there were no meetings in CT or Western MA. Does anyone know of any or should we CT/WesternMA folks make one?

I had wanted to join a Whip Enthusiasts group for a while but there was no CT group and Boston was to far for me to go for just a whip cracking meeting. sounds like a good idea to me!

I know there is a group up in southern NH... but I haven't gotten round to contacting them yet. If enough people were interested, I don't see why we can't try to get a group together in the Mass/CT area.

Doesn't ecwhips host a group in New Jersey?Of course, being in Texas I don't know how far he'd be from y'all. It might be a heck of a drive. You might even talk with Sebastian of the Whip Enthusiasts since he might know of other groups that have popped up as I'm not sure how updated the Whip Enthusiast page is on here:

And ITG, its not so much how far away Jersey is... its the getting there via the Cross Bronx Expressway that 'll kill ya'...

It's not that far off from me, but I don't host a Whip Enthusiasts group here anymore. NJ is still listed on the WE page, but I gave up on the group last year. Of course, I still get out to do some cracking on the weekend, but it was getting to be a drag answering all kinds of email about the group and giving directions out to people and still being the only one showing up. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join me out in the park, though!

Since you hosted a group, let me ask you this. Are there any issues that come up regarding using the whips in a public park? Do the police or neighbors ever get freaked? lol

No, not really. When I go to the park I stay in an area that is far from the picnic tables and the ball field, and I always hold off if somone comes through the area walking a dog. Sometimes people will stop and watch, and maybe even come over and talk to me about the whips if they're feeling brave that day! I had one incident where someone didn't like the noise and called the police. The officer that came said someone complained, and he made up some BS story about an ordinance that prohibited the use of whips on county property. LOL!!! He could have just asked me to stop and I would have gladly obliged him. Anyway, I checked out his BS story with a couple of cops that I knew personally and they told me he probably couldn't think if anything better to tell me at the time, and that it was fine to use my whips there. I also did as much research as I could on my own, and found nothing specifically related to whips. But do as much research as you can in your own area just to be on the safe side.

I agree,
its always a good idea to do some research and see what the laws are if any, concerning whips.

Some things that have seemed to help me, as for showing whips in a positive light, was having a target holder, or using targets in some way,
that seemed to spark interest from others, if you don't have one, you can use an arrow shaft, which you stick in the ground, putting styrofoam strip on it, or if you want to have some real fun, try an apple.(Jim , you knew I was going to say that) .

Also,
having a button saying WWAC was great for openers, that usually dismissed some of the silly questions, which I'm sure all of you at one time or another have been asked.

Our local whip group cracks by the park's bathroom area and across from the ball fields. Not once have we had a noise complaint (that I'm aware of anyway) and just last weekend we had quite a few stop to watch and a group of guys off the street even came up and learned a few cracks with the help of the men in our group.

I believe it was Sebastian who told me of a time at their former location when they had a complaint from someone in a nearby apartment complex, but if I remember correctly, the officer that answered the call seemed somewhat interested in wanting to try cracking the whip but knew it'd probably be in his best interest not to.

Ihave a whip on the way and my new condo that I am moving to in May has a roof deack overlooking Boston. So, I'll be up there cracking and hopefully, I won't receive any complaints.

Of course, this being Boston where nearly everything is illegal, I'll be expecting a police helicopter to come zooming in.

Be careful cracking on your roof, as it may damage your whip. Grass is the best thing to crack over.

Thanks for the tip, Zohar. I didn't realize that. Do you think the condo association will get upset if I plant grass or put down some Astro-turf?

Outdoor carpeting isn't a bad idea actually!

For a season at an amusement park I was performing with the whips and the location I was performing in had concrete ground. I went to Home Depot and bought some outdoor carpeting and managed to get through the season (approx. 3 shows/day, 6 days/week) without damaging the whips. The fall would take the brunt of the abuse and I'd lose a popper every now and then.

Now, when I go to Boston I'll have to listen for the sound of whipcracking on the rooftops!
