S&W Military and Police

Post by binkmeisterRick »

I was in a local gun shop yesterday and came across a Smith and Wesson Military and Police .38 Special. It has wood grips with the medalion (although not with the diamond pattern grips like the HE2) a 4" barrel, and a lanyard ring attached. It is in EXCELLENT, if not almost new condition with the manual. The blueing is georgeous, and from what I could tell, the bore was shiny as a mirror. It's a beautiful revolver. :D

He's asking $325 for it. Does anyone know if this is a good price?

I'm thinking of saving up for it, although my wife told me yesterday that my recent IndyGear fetish has become an obsession. (If I don't slow down, I'll most likely be in the dog house. I think I may need to take you up on the offer to sleep on your couch, Michaelson.)

Come ahead! (grins) That seems an AWFUL lot for a M&P, but then I remember them when they were avaiable for around $150 in mint condition. Ron, Pyro, can your comment on the current price? Regards. Michaelson

I tried to do a basic search on several online gun classifieds and got prices that seem to run the gammut. The M&P I looked at is in near mint condition, if not mint. I can't tell that it's ever been fired. That, or it hasn't been used much. The action is nice and tight. If the tag had said $150, there'd be no question but I'd have it now. If anyone does have a good idea on what a good price would be, I'd like to know. Thanks!

:D

P.S. I don't need to borrow your couch just yet, Michaelson, but the backup's always nice.

Unless there is an historical reason for the high price (asociation with some esoteric military organization, etc.), this does seem a little high for an M&P. There is a 4" barrel 5-screw (with the old long-action of the pre-1950 models) in the local gun shop for $269. I believe this would be more in line with the pricing. My suggestion would be to offer the shop owner something in this vicinity. If it has the old "long-action", then this does make it worth a little more. I will say this, if he doesn't budge on the price, and if you really want it...go for it! Any firearm is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. And the old, pre-1950 S&W's are getting more rare each day!

Just my $0.02 worth!

I'm not sure of the age of the revolver, but the lanyard ring looks the same as the ring on my WWII Victory. If I get back to the gunshop soon, I'll try to get the serial number and see if I can date the gun. Thanks for the input, guys! bink

That's too high for a M&P. Smith made millions of these and they generally aren't bringing that much these days.

I've found something better, so I think I'm going to pass on the M&P anyway. Thanks, though! bink
