Wested Leather...Which one is best?

First time post and new to the club. I appreciate everyone's feedback. I am looking at purchasing my first Indy Jacket and had a few questions. I will list them down below and would appreciate everyone's thought and opinions.

1. Leather type. Which does everyone find best? Lambskin is light, soft, but durability issues? Goatskin, more durable, softish, but greyish color? Cowhide, durable, nice color, but too heavy?

2. Sleeves length. This might tie in with the leather type used, but what's everyone's experience with the sleeve length "shrinking" or shortening over time with Wested jackets?

Again, thank you for any and all feedback.

Hey, and welcome!
I’m sure many will chime in here with their experience, here’s mine-

1. Leather
The short answer here to “what is best” really depends what you want from your jacket. Warmth/durability/accuracy/ability to weather?
The off the rack leathers are all chrome tanned, I believe, which means any weathering or distressing you do will show gray and need dying. This is pretty straight forward though.
The Legacy leather is nice and soft and is veg tanned, so it has better undertones. It’s a medium weight lambskin, so some think it’s too heavy for accuracy, I found it to be a relatively light jacket. It doesn’t have much (any) texture though, so not actually perfect for a Raiders jacket.
The Destiny Lambskin is really nice, the nicest I’ve seen from Wested. I wouldn’t mind getting a raiders Hero jacket made from that leather, though it would require some dying to get to the right color. Again, thats not as daunting as it may sound. Pretty simple actually, but do you want to get into that degree of work?
Not everyone does. I found it fun.
I will also say lambskin is not very durable. It will rip if you catch it on anything. I was attacked by a dog recently (!) while wearing my legacy jacket, and the sleeve is full of holes now. The next day I had to go back to the same place and switched to a cowhide jacket and the dog chewed on me some more, no damage at all. Long story lol
So the question is- is this a fashion jacket or does it need to be functional, and what is your lifestyle like? If you are tough on jackets, or wear them while working, or doing anything adventurous where the jacket may take a beating, go with goat or cow. Lamb for looking nice.

2. Sleeve length
I’ve noticed about 1/2” of shrinking with sleeve crumpling/use. I use that as a rule of thumb now, go half inch over what you want and it will probably wind up perfect later, though I like my sleeves a touch longer.
Hope this helps!

Northern Raider,
Much appreciated and great feedback. I am only disappointed I hadn't found this group sooner. Glad to be here and thanks again.

I should also add that this is one of the most asked questions on this forum. If you spend a little time going through all the back pages you’ll find a wealth of information.

For Wested, I'd honestly jump on the Legacy line, with the Legacy leather they're using right now too....If those had been around when I first started? I'd have been left with just one jacket over the last 15 or so years instead of the 20 or so I've gone through....(Soon to be 21...Kelso arriving soon...LOL)

Wested Legacy Raiders, for me, looks pretty much the peak of their work..As for sleeves, get the size that works for you, don't predict it based on shrinkage, since that probably won't affect it a huge enough deal to matter...Order your size. If it shortens a touch due to rain or shower work? That's ok too...Since you're ordering to your thumb knuckle, there's still a little that can be lost fine...

1 - I'm on a real lambskin kick these days. Back in the day, I read all the horror stories both here, and in other places online. Some people write about lambskin as though you breathe on it, and the jacket falls into half a dozen pieces. And although it's taken me until more recent times - and owning a Wested in lambskin - I can say it's just not reality. It does just fine.

(That said, would I wear it on a motorbike? No. Would I subject it to being dragged behind a truck? No. You know, just common sense type stuff...)

If you want 'the drape' of Indy's jacket, it's got to be lambskin. Heck, if you're on a I-must-replicate-what-the-movie-jacket-was kick, it's got to be lambskin.

2 - My arms were about an inch too long, but after getting the jacket really soaked (OK, I actually put it through a washing cycle... shhh, lambskin's not meant to resist human breath, let alone that), I noticed the arms scrunch up nicely and now the arms are pretty much perfect. So I wouldn't get arms that fit perfectly from the start, as they'll likely end up too short.

Welcome and good luck :whip:

thanks for the feeback. Would you say the Desitny lambskin leather they're using is more durable than other lambskin they're using. I am looking for a jacket that looks nice but is functional and can be worn daily without fear of it getting too banged up.

It definitely feels thicker than the legacy lamb. I should also add in response to some of the above that if you’re doing normal everyday stuff a lambskin jacket should be totally fine. I’m fairly tough on my jackets, and clothes in general, so I have noticed the difference in durability perhaps more than most. I need my leather tough so it can go with me anywhere, and to do anything.
Cheers,
