Hi. I got my Todd's Costume 10 foot whip today which is my very first whip and I tried it a few times and the cracker fell of very easily so I'm fonder is that a common thing? I attached my self and lighted the end of the fall with my lighter and it seem to help it from falling of but I'm not sure if it was the right way.I watched a how to attach a cracker to a whip and followed the instruction there.I took a few picture of it since I always prefer to show with pictures more than with words. Also two things I wonder does the thickness of the fall have anything to say on ow easy or hard it is to swing the whip? and Can I make crackers out of string like the one I from the picture I posted? Thanks in advance as always :D

Hey, my friend!

First of all a question: does the cracker fall off, or does fall break?

It looks like the fall is a bit dry, I have had this happen: if it is dry it can break each time you crack it. If you moisturize it really well it will help.

Secondly, if that is not the case: you need to make sure you tighten the cracker really well. I am not sure what method you used, I will take a pic and share my go to method, which has worked best for me.

Regarding the fall weight/thickness: if the fall is thicker than the diameter of the last part of the whip, you will feel it. It feel very awkward when trying to swing the whip. Just like the effect of having a weight at the end of the string. The fall should continue the taper of the whip up to a fine point.

Edit: the cracker material - you can make crackers out of anything. It's just that some materials last less than others. Nylon works quite well (paracord innards, or leather thread). Natural fibers like cotton would break more easily.

Cheers,
Bear

Found a video, I use method #2, starting at around the 1 minute mark:

Ok, I understand the lighter comment now. That is only meant for a paracord fall, not for leather.

Also for a leather fall, where you do not have that end-stop, you might want to leave a longer "nub" if you are going to use that method. And if you choose another method to attach the cracker, you don't need to have the cracker right at the end of the fall. You can leave 0.5-1 cm space and the whip will still work great.

Aside from that, it will help to condition the fall very well. In the pictures you shared the fall looks very dry, and even if it doesn't break off it does not provide a proper base to tie the cracker on.

Cheers,
Bear

Thanks for the answers :) I checked out Pecard leather dressing but it costs a Lot to import it to my country it seems like.I checked on Pecard's homepage, amazon and ebay and all of them it costs quiet a lot for it.Is there any cheaper equally good options? Edit: I found one here in a store called Heimer Superior Leather balsam.Sorry the page is in Norwegian language but it says the conditioner contains: avacado-oil,beeswax and lanolin

I am not sure what is OK to use, I only ever use Pecard's. I think Fiebing's Aussie leather conditioner was ok also and you should be able to find it within the EU.

Neatsfoot Oil is a no-go for sure.

I've heard conflicting accounts on whether lanolin is just fine or disastrous for whips. I can't say for sure myself because I've only ever used Pecard's... I got a tin of it for about 15 USD from Amazon, but maybe the prices are a lot more in the EU :-k I wouldn't know, I've only ever visited Europe, never lived there, and I didn't buy any Pecard's while I was there :rolling: To echo what Bear said, I've heard that Fiebing's Aussie leather conditioner works well!

This may be a bit taboo but for this issue I've always applied a tiny bit of super glue to keep the cracker on. Otherwise it always eventually flies off. Normally when it's time to replace the cracker it's possible to cut just the cracker to get it off without cutting the fall at all, rinse and repeat. :H:

The import fees here in Norway is SO ridiculous.I tried searching for Fiebing's Aussie leather conditioner but it also ends up being over 90 us dollars which are insane for just some dressing. I think maybe I take the chance on the one I posted since it at least doesn't empty my wallet. The Norwegian krone is really weak now so that doesn't help at all either.

Edit: I Found a Swedish place that sells Fiebing's Aussie leather conditioner so that solved my problem :D

Lederhaus, in Germany also carries it. Would also be without taxes, since it is in the EU. :TOH:

I've seen those around but haven't seen any detailed reviews... so I'm interested to see how you like yours once you have it in hand.
