What kind of Pecards should I order?

Post by Indiana_Alex »

Hi guys. Now that I own a whip I need to order some Pecards. But I'm not sure what kind to get. I know that it comes in different forms(jell, paste etc.) but I'm not sure which is used for what. I also heard that they make one especially for whips, is it any better than the regular stuff? The main thing that I'd be using the Pecards on will be my cowhide whip but I also have a cow jacket that has been treated with neatsfoot oil  and I have a holster that could definatley use some softening. I might also use a little on my bag strap to soften that up a bit aswell. Also how long does this stuff last? Should I buy the smallest one, since I won't be using it that often, or get the next size up? As always any help or opinions will be appreciated. Thanks
Cheers, Alex

Recommendation

For the items you've mentioned above, standard Pecard's leather dressing is the best route, in my opinion. It will soak into your whip, holster, boots, etc. with ease overnight, and keep your gear in great shape. I would also recommend you order the medium size tub, as you're treating gear that's had neatfoot oil applied (not good, as that's made from animal oils that eventually break down and turn rancid, dissolving the leather over time with repeated use) and the pH balanced nature of Pecards will help rebalance the leather, as well as soften the leather for use. You'll need enough to do the job. As to how long will it last...that's up to you and YOUR useage of the item. If you go rambling around in the rain a lot with your whip, you'll need it quite a bit. If you don't use your gear all that often, maybe once a month or more. It just depends. Either way, Pecards is just great stuff. Hope this gives you some food for thought. Check out the Pecards webpage and read more about the product and it's usages on leather. It's a great source of information too, if you haven't already been there. Regards. Michaelson

Thanks Michaelson, I always enjoy hearing from you. I took your advise and snooped around Pecards website, really good info. I ordered the 16oz tub of the regular Pecard formula. I figure I can save on shipping if I get the big one since I won't hafta order any for a while. By the way I read somewhere(I think on the David Morgan website) about what neatsfoot oil will do to leather overtime but I can't seem to find that info  . I've been trying to explain to my parents why I have to buy a 16.00$ leather conditioner instead of using the Neatsfoot oil we have here. One more thing, do you let the the Pecards dry inside or outside of the houes? Thanks.

Understood

You can find the same info at the Pecards site, as well as the literature that comes from the company with your tub of dressing. Bottom line, Pecards is pH balanced and will keep your gear in fine shape...Neatsfoot oil is made from hooves of animals, turns rancid after a while, and can actually dissolve and destroy leather with constant and lengthy use. It's controlled destruction, if you will. (grins) Glad you got the 16 oz. tub. That will last you quite a while. Mine has. Regards. Michaelson

Now if the good people at Pecards could find a means of "controlled destruction" in distressing leather a bit more safely than using acetone, and without those noxious fumes, which folks seem to like to do, they would have both ends covered.

Ha, ha, ha!!

Rixter....I just had a vision in my head of my boss asking me what in the heck I was doing to our leather samples as I carefully beat the tarnation out of them. "Controlled destruction" most likely would get me fired... LOL! Does sound like fun though.

...just tell him you're moonlighting for Underwriters Labs and testing products using Pecard's dressing. He MAY believe you. (grins) Regards. Michaelson

I got my Pecards yesterday and as I type it is being soaked up by my whip etc. Its really cool that they include a little bottle of shoe oil with what I ordered, for free. I've applied it to my boots and it has darkened them to my liking. And no they are not Aldens, unfortunately. I now know why you guys rave about this product so much. Thanks to all for showing me the light.

Cool stuff. Eh? I just ordered a 32oz. tub of dressing and some brown weatherproofing. I should be set for a while. My leather gear will thank me. :D
