Hey all-

What socks do you wear with your boots? I've got drawers full (as I expect many of us probably do) but I have never been intentional about socks as a garment. I suppose there isn't a "screen" accurate pair of socks but I am curious...

What keeps your feet dry, warm and comfortable in your adventuring boots?

For sure not SA, but for around 20 years or so I have been wearing only one type of socks. Every few years I go to Selgros and buy 30 pairs at once and refresh my stock:

It has a thick soft interior on the foot part of the sock. It offers some protection with tougher footwear. (Will help with your Wested boots I think).

They are like 65% cotton I think. So that might be a deal breaker for you. :-k

Thanks for your reply!

I don't have a similar store near me, but I definitely follow your logic... "if one is good three is better"...

I never really gave much thought to socks as they are often handed out at the holidays at a rate that I never seem to run low. That said, I only have 1 or 3 pairs of wool socks that even approach the category of being a "boot sock". No longer living in a cold climate I hardly if ever wear them but I suspect there might be a wool sock variety that would do the trick.

I think hunting socks might be a great option. Made specifically for trudging along in boots through mud and rain. I am sure a hunting/military profile store has loads of options. If you are in the US, well, shopping in easy! :D

Maybe too thick socks are not for you, though... one thing I should mention: my feet are never "too warm" somehow. Not that they get cold easy, either. But I can wear leather boots and thick socks in the hottest summer without issue. People are always asking me if I not too hot in my boots. :rolling:

Funny this should come up today-- it's pouring outside and I just switched to my Smartwool socks for the duration. For years I wore them with a thin polypro wicking liner, especially for sailing, paddling and snow sports, but they don't really need it. Wool wicks and insulates even when wet. They come in all weights and thicknesses, so you can wear them year-round. I just don't hike as much as I used to. For daily wear and light outdoor work I still like cotton blends, but only if there's no chance of getting wet far from home. As the saying goes, "cotton kills."

I'm down to try anything that works! Looks like a few sporting goods stores near me carry the smart wool products.

As far as the military and hunting options, one of my buddies up north pointed me to some good potential options.. but his climate is much more like Siberia than the amazon so..

Just to follow back-- I picked up a couple of different pairs of merino wool socks and they have been working a treat. I'll be more careful in my sizing of an Indy style boot in the future however-- I think that will help even more.

Best,

Cool, glad you found something good! Are the boots too tight or.a tad too big? :-k

Bear-

Just a tad too big-- although this size is what I would wear in any other boot... go figure. They have definitely improved as I put some wear into the leather. Continue to get compliments on them and IMHO they wear well with anything that I would normally wear. Except maybe athletic shorts or a suit.

I think too big is always better. I think if they were just right they might wreak havoc on your feet. At least in my experience! :rolling:

Yup, it's really easy to wear them with anything: blue jeans, khakis! They're not picky.
