HOLT'S MYSTERY OF THE BLUES* Builders thread

Hi guys.
Im back in the saddle again!! Its been ages since I made a topic. I have done a few of these builders threads int he past. You might remember my Temple of doom builder thread?
This time around Im doing the most screen accurate Motb outfit. And in terms of screen acurracy I mean colors and close enough details. Colors first and foremost then details since we have so little to work with in terms of 4k resolution
.
So, we start with the boots as this is something we take fro granted. They are Aldens right? Or are they? In humble my opinion, they are not Aldens. They look thicker and more blocky boots. And it would alot make sense! Why would Ford not pick thicker snowboots over slippery non insulated Aldens?...
Working in the film industry myself, I know that when we shoot outdoors in the cold snowy landscape, we use insulated snowboots. Working on set is alot of waiting between shots and feet get COLD so... you need warm boots.
You be the judge but I can not help but see other boots.

I looked at this video when they are in the cabin, and I'm pretty sure he's wearing Aldens or at least some kind of ankle boot...

Since this sequence was shot near Ford’s ranch in Jackson Hole, WY, they’re once again probably Ford’s personal winter boots.
Ford once said YEARS ago that most of the stuff he wore for MofTB’s was his own personal stuff, even though in later interviews he also claims he kept nothing.
I guess as time goes along he doesn’t want to appear to be a fan of his own work. It would probably also make it appear he’s endorsing a particular vendor, which he does not, though he’s been seen over the years wearing the Gibson and Barnes ‘Expedition’ he was gifted decades ago.

As long as you're doing a build out thread, one of my biggest gripes about people trying to figure out what color this is and what that looks like, etc...
Where are folks getting screen shots from?
Most of what I've seen look like they're taking them off the tv screen of a VHS playback with a 1MP camera phone.
Do reasonably high res shots from a DVD exist?

There are some higher resolution versions of the YIJC on YouTube, link to MotB below - although not sure how helpful it will be!

A bit better. But that almost looks like it was upres'd from 480 (TV) DVD. You can tell when you try to actually blow the image up to 1080p.
But I guess better than nothing.
Thanks

I’d say you’re right there. I’m not sure how much of a market there is for full HD on the YIJC, it’s niche even amongst Indy fans! The CGI is very spotty by modern standards so to go to higher resolutions would mean re-doing most of the CGI.
I don’t think this show gets the credit it deserves. I’d rate it along with Twin Peaks for its influence on Television. Groundbreaking technically, a mammoth production, and George Lucas left to run amok - whether you think that is a good or bad thing is up to you lol
Sorry for the digression!

This something I’ve been wanting for a long time, as close to SA as possible.

As much as Ford wants to appear non-chalant about his own work, at the end of the day he's an actor that has made some of the biggest blockbusters of his era. He may not keep lots of stuff but I'd be hard pressed to think he doesn't have a hat and jacket from Indiana Jones considering it's the one iconic character he seems to actually like.
I know in at least one interview I read years ago he admitted he had one of the hats (probably from LC) he grumbled..... that it was ".....hanging on the back of the door in his barn".

These do look blockier. Also is that... a fur lining I see peaking out in one of the pics?

When he first picks up the sax and he turns around, you can get a better pic of the boots as he walks thru the light.
I’m on phone, or I’d do it.
The red wings aren’t it.
Here’s a adjusted version of your shot, see how much more rounded the toes are?
They’re not a moc toe.
Maybe a timberland or Herman survivor?

From those angles, I would say they are definitely not Aldens.
Seriously, you guys have got to get out of your heads that HF only ever wears Aldens or Red wings.
Those look like a standard old guy, off the rack work boot. I think I've seen my dad wearing something similar.
Like Michaelson mentioned, this was a tv show they filmed in his area in Wyoming, they likely brought along bare minimum
costume pieces that got him close to the look.
The sweater and scarf, were probably both his own stuff, along with the boots.
A quick search did just bring up this…
The Clark’s Craftsdale. I’d say these are pretty close.

LL Bean sold a boot that looked a lot like the ones in the pics. The boots had their label but were made by Chippewa. They had lug soles and were waterproof. I’ve been blessed to have two pairs over the years. They still sell a similar boot but they are no longer made for them by Chippew, last I knew. Prior to that change, I think they had sold them for years! If the boots in the pics aren’t them, they sure are close!

Nice to know. Bean went on to other vendors, but Chippewa is still around.
They been in business since 1902 or so and they still make this one too
Holt, MotB only just came out in 1993, so “vintage” is still probably in your life span!

Fun being in the age that those days are considered the good ol day.
Me, I’m most interested on the cardigan, where do you search for “vintage” item like that, as the cardigan is most sought after item, but if only to have the look.

Yep, or solid ‘50’s’, but new designers are sliding the 70’s into the mix. There’s all kinds of designers singing the praises of restored avocado or harvest gold appliances for ‘mid century’ kitchen plans.
I never got that interested in the cardigan myself. They’re nice by themselves, but just one more thing hanging in the closet.

So, I found some old pleated 100% wool pants. They match up to LC pants, which were reused in Motb. They have pretty much all the color and detail Indy pants need.
I personally love them.

Are you going to resew the belt loops so they are dropped? That is one feature that you almost NEVER see on off-the-rack "close enoughs". It's evident when you see a bit more of the trousers above the web belt on Indy than usual pants. Great find in any case! How do the pocket flaps look?

Yup, those are the two things I allways see too. Im trying to source out another one of the same kind. One smaller so my tailor can chop it up and make some flaps
If I cant find anything Ill just let it be as is.

I think I found it! I mean THE brand used. I have a theory on that. More on that later!
My gripe on all the MoB cosplays is the contrast between the scarf and sweater. Dont get me wrong, there are alot of GREAT MoB cosplays out there. But the scarf I see people get allways seems too light in color. I think this is because people compare and buy to what the saxophone scarf looks like, which is not the original color. Original color is way darker.
Two scarfs with different shade of color but they are made by the same maker. Luckily I own both.

I’m calling BS on the different colors though.
You of all people know you can not judge colors based on screen shots. Especially off of low res tv screen shots…
But it is a nice looking match to the scarf…

Nah... I get ya! But its not all quite BS on screen grabs and colormatching. If you look at the pants you can see the color of the scarf is not far from the pants. They mathc up pretty good. So to me that means the scarf is a officer pink/Taupe/camel color. And not a light saxaphone beige, caramel or khaki color.
But yeah, some BS is in there for sure. colormatching and screengrabs is a hard thing to do, but having worked with colors in a previous life, I kinda have a feel for it. But I can be totaly of base here. WHo knows.. maby the scarf is pink?
Well see wHen I put it together with my vintage cardigan, which btw has arrived.

Yeah, it makes more sense that it'd be the same scarf in both scenes. The contrast between the scarf and pants could easily be the way they react to the exterior natural lighting vs the interior studio lighting. Really looking forward to seeing the specs of what you've found in any case! Maybe it will inspire us to update our own Wyoming Scarf.

I have now 6 scarfs to choose from. 3 of those are the light beige saxophone color so I wont even try to match it with the sweater.
