I have 2 Morgan whips. 1 is 12' and, according to the person that I bought it from, it was first purchased in 2001. The other is a newer 8' that is from 2008. I noticed the newer 8'whip has the knot beginning 6" from the foundation. The 12' is farther from the foundation by about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch.
My question is; When did DM start moving the knots lower on the handle?
Was it prior to LC? Did it creep shorter over the years?
and
Does anyone else have different knot placement from DM based on length?
Edited to fix date.
David Morgan and the moving of the knot.

Re: David Morgan and the moving of the knot.
I think the knots started to be tied lower in the late 90's.
This is comparison from our own Dan Borton:
Left to right: 6ft 1999, 8ft 2001, 10ft 1996, 10ft 1989
As you can see, the 8ft from the 2001 has the knot placed at lowest from the other ones.
And here we have the whip from the 80's with higher placed knot:

cool. Thanks. Here's a pic of the handles next to a ruler. The bottom one is newer, believe it or not.

Re: David Morgan and the moving of the knot.
The placement of the knot was never exact, it always moved a little from whip to whip, even among the film whips. Sometimes it would be a bit higher, sometimes lower. Some vintage Morgan’s also had them noticeably lower than the 8” mark, but it became more of a norm around 2001-02, that’s when David Morgan started shortening the diamond plaiting and placed the transition knot lower, making the handle appear shorter. Interestingly they have since been moved up higher again in more recent years.

I'm sorry, it won't happen again.
