Any good ways to darken a tan Magnoli whip...?

Post by Howard Weinstein »

I have a tan Magnoli whip (the $75 one). It looks great, except that I wish it was a little darker. When I'm not costuming once or twice a year, the whip is in a closet.

Does anyone know of any weathering tips or leather products which can make the leather a little darker? Thanks!

Put some Pecards on it and leave it in a sunny spot in the house/apt.

What are people's thoughts on using Brown Tinted Pecard's on a whip to darken it?

I used regular on mine, and it didn't darken it too much. Would using Pecard's with a tint be a good shortcut? Especially if you're going for a Raider's tone?

But Raiders is just slightly aged natural tan? Browning it would be closer to LC since that’s a pretty old Morgan in that one.

Honestly, don’t take a shortcut. It will age pretty quickly with Pecards, handling and sunshine. Its not the Pecards that darkens it by itself, it’s sunlight and handling. If you want a LC whip, I’d pick up a new one made from the right color hide and sell yours.

If using Pecard's (or any leather dressing) be careful with how much. Over saturating the whip can cause the strands to swell and the plaiting to become irregular. The tip shared by our own BullWhipBorton is to put a small amount in your palm (quarter sized dollop) and run your hand down the length of the whip a few times. You don't need to use half a container.
