Length of cracker

Post by Raider Of The Lost Ark »

Hi, I’m just wondering if the length of the cracker makes any difference. I’ve had to buy some more, the loose ends kept getting knots, and the ones I was sent vary in length. Some are about the same length as those I’ve been using. Some a little bit longer. However some are really long. So I was wondering if that would be an issue. If it is I suppose I could tie a knot further up, and then cut the length down. Though if it makes no difference, I’ll just leave it.

If it’s at least 4 inches you should be good, just try to untangle the knots, but not all knots affect the whip the same.

I make mine around 8 inches long, with knot 2-3 inches from the end.

Thank you both. The ones I’ve got are over 4”, nearer 8 / 10. The longest ones are nearer 18 inches.

I’ve been having a right pain with crackers lately. Fist one got a big knot in it. I tried teasing it out but the end looks more like a dandelion head now. I put it to one side and I’ll keep trying, just ‘for fun’. So I had a few spares and put a new one on. First time out I got another knot. I should have left it but thought I could cut through the knot, so just loosing a couple of strands. What ended up happening was I lost everything from the knot to the end. No worries, I thought, I still have enough. Next time out the end of the fall snapped off, so I lost the cracker too ](*,)

Put another one on, got another knot second time out. At this point I decided to leave it well alone, but I only had one left. So I bought some more. They are thicker / heavier duty than the ones I had originally. I’ve no idea if that will make any difference. I just don’t want to cause damage to the whip. Should it all be ok?
