The Tombstone Doc Holliday hat had the Raiders Turn!

Post by 3thoubucks »

My favorite hat after Raiders, got my first one today, used, on ebay. 90% wool 10% rabbit. No brim warp. Never thought the brim warp was due to turning, (to the left this time) but it was! I found out today when I turned it! The hat was too tight for me, but that was just in front and back. There were gaps on the sides because my head was longer than the oval, and the wool felt was too stiff to conform to my head shape. -And this solved the mystery of the gap on Doc's left side! When I turned the hat the gap on the right side almost went away, and the gap on the left side got almost wide enough to fully insert my thumb without resistance. This frame from the duel scene between Doc and Ringo, shows the gap I'm talking about well. The crown on his left side looks too far away from his head. https://images.app.goo.gl/RQ4TexyKBjfq5kSeA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I guess the movie hat was a stiff wool or wool rabbit blend, or maybe the ribbon bound pencil rolled 4 inch brim keeps the hat from conforming, making the gap.
My hat has a 6 inch open crown with some taper in the sides, a lot front and back. Wasn't sold as a Doc Holliday hat. Might be able to get close. The bashes are permanent formed on a block with carved in bashes. Might be weeks before I post pics. Might have to make a block if steam doesn't work. I will post a pic in this thread though.

Considering the hatter for the film does not offer wool hats, there is good cause to doubt your conclusions.

That devilish curl on the brim is unmistakable. The $895 black hat is “a must have for the true Doc Holliday aficionado,” reads the sale on valkilmer.com, where the actor includes a description of Hirt, “the official hat maker for the film ‘Tombstone.’”

No one does it like Hirt, the website says. Pure beaver hide. The crown formed over 100-year-old timber blocks. Flanged, sanded, pounced and finished all by hand.

For his tools, Hirt counts a sturdy string, a wooden cylinder and a brush. No technology.

“This is it,” Hirt says, pointing to a vintage Singer sewing machine that does some stitching.

Wearing the Hirt hat https://images.app.goo.gl/jRqNMSanFGcFjNoH8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Are you kidding?

The movie brim starts to flip up at the center front. The Hirt hat is way off. Center front is where it starts to flip on my turned hat automaticly. https://images.app.goo.gl/5uxe7wzxwyQPWgjX8

That may be the case for your hat, but as the original maker doesn't make wool hats and further describes the hat he made as having a brim rolled "by hand" I am inclined to take his word for it. That the hats he is selling en masse don't exactly match the screen hat has no significance to your claim the film hat is turned.

I was reading that and a video ad started playing, so I left. Does it really say he made THE original hat? I thought the language was indirect.
Never had a beaver hat, I've heard they're stiffer than rabbit, and if there was enough stiffener, I guess it could be as stiff as my hat.
I lent my vhs copy of Tombstone to a guy and he left town with it. Have a dvd on order, not a lot of side views online. I'm going to have to make a block.

Here's pretty much proof the hat was turned. The back of the brim opposite the front flip is also flipped up. I just checked the back of my hat with a handheld mirror in my bathroom mirror, and I'm seeing the same flip in back. Both flips dissapear when I unturn the hat.

Beyond a passing reference to the Raider's turn this discussion has nothing to do with Indy Gear.

The debate about Doc's hat, it's maker and how it got it's look (that I too like very much) can be discussed in another corner of the interwebs. :TOH:
