What Fedora Was Reference for the Amsel "A" Poster?

I think a lot of my impressions of what a Raiders fedora should look like is informed by the poster as much as the film itself.
Do we know what Richard Amsel used for reference for the Style A poster? To me it looks like the Peru Jungle, but I'm not sure. I would love to know precisely what reference photos he used.
What fedora do you think this represents?
This Preliminary design seems to have the Raven Bar winged curls on the sides of the brim.

I'm probably answering my own question:
I imagine somewhere in LucasFilm Archives, there exists a shot very close to that Peru photo that is an exact match. I wish it would surface.

You got it, bud. That's the photo the poster image is based off of.

Interesting that this poster also emphasises a more moustachioed appearance for Indy.

You're correct, the reference shot Richard used was based on the one in this post.
I have looked through the archives and an exact photo doesn't seem to exist but that's not unusual because an artist should use references from different sources when creating poster art - not a single image.

Thanks, Mark! Nice of you to chime in.
You are spot on, of course. The bag strap and certain aspects of the collar of the shirt, and of course the bullwhip seem to match this photo. Although the fingers and thumb are slightly different.

Yes he is a bit more heavily ‘tasched in Raiders than the others.

Well Raiders also takes place over a longer period of time. I'm sure people have guesstimated it, but it's certainly possible the main story arc of Raiders was over weeks -- the flights from the US to Nepal to Cairo alone would have taken days. And the Cairo stay before the Well of the Souls seems longer than the film implies, certainly more than just a few days. ToD takes place over a few days; even the elephant ride to Pankot seems to have just been an overnight thing. And LC is longer, but the main thrust from Venice to Turkey/Syria was seemingly no longer than a week; even the drive from Venice to Austria isn't long. The longest period in a real life scenario would actually probably be the blimp ride, even if it only got half way before they bail. ToD and LC are also kind of impromptu where starts off shaven and in a suit/tux.

Yes, there are scenes in Raiders where I think his mustache appears quite thick. Especially the cobra scene.

Had a little fun photoshopping the two reference photos together. I think this is pretty close.

Thank you! It's fun to reverse engineer the process that Richard Amsel must've used. It's also personally a thrill to have KramStaar weigh in on this thread.

I always wondered if the slightly heavier mustache in Raiders was due to Tom Selleck being the first choice. It seems strange that they'd trim the rest of his scruff more than the 'stache.

I guess it was the look of the time, maybe. A bit of Selleck, a bit of Burt…

I’m resurrecting this post sorta, it’s not that old.
My question is similar to the original and is direct towards Mark aka Kramstarr.
Which hat did you use for your reference in your Raiders one sheet.
I’m going for a new lid soon, and I’m going back and forth on which.
It’ll be Raiders no doubt.
Thanks in advance.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think it was based on one of the hats used in Cairo. Also if you don’t mind me asking, who were you thinking of buying a new hat from?

Hi Croft --
@IJJTM is right on the money, the hat I used is indeed the Streets of Cairo lid.
Our own Mike has been invaluable in helping me with getting costumes and lids correct and that particular lid has always been a favorite of mine.
I secured on of the S&J Streets Fedora's a while back and its incredible. I look forward to seeing who you get yours from mate.
All the best,
MARK

Sweet, I'm going with AdVintage master piece.
Money is saved and I'll probably be ordering tomorrow, since I'll have a little wait.
And I'm going to drive him a little nutty.
Ok here it is, I have to say that all my hats have a turn, even my AdVintage ToD bridge scene I asked for a slight turn.
His SOC are awesome with the mushroom, but based on the pictures, the mushroom effect starts a little above the ribbon.
And that kinda distracts me, when we start bantering back and fourth, I'm going to give him KramStaar one sheet picture and ROTLA second release picture as reference but most importantly, if he does the mushroom effect, it has to start right at the ribbon.
But the other side (the left side Twix) wants a Idol grab with no turn, or a slight turn. this will be the part that's drive me nutty.
I literally could order 2-3 hats, I want a Raiders in a different color, tanish.

Funny I was thinking the same thing.
I’m probably going SoC, but I will be having several emails discussing this hat.
I’m going to be compiling several pictures from screen grabs.com.
