UPDATE: PRE-ORDERS NOW AVAILABLE: https://www.magnoliclothiers.com/marsha ... -1166.html

---ORIGINAL POST BELOW---

We've been working on this for a while (along with Henry's Briefcase) and finally have a prototype done:

Image

Since the original is difficult to see in the film and there are very few photos of it, I based ours on a similar model from Swaine Adeney Brigg. A few points about details:

• The bag in the film didn't have straps. I believe it originally would have, but they were either lost, damaged or removed for one reason or another. I decided to include the straps because they look great and they are easily removable if you want to. There are two things on the bottom of the flap on the original lined up where the original straps would have been. This could possibly have been loops riveted to the leather to hold the straps in place, which were then cut off during production. I'm not sure if we should rivet our loops similarly or leave them off for those who want a "clean" front if used without the straps. Opinions?
• Matching the latch on the original exactly will be impossible, so we'll be adding some brass pieces on the top and bottom of the latch we sourced to mimic the original more closely.
• I think the top of the flap (where the handle is) should be simpler: we're probably remove the D rings and end that leather piece just at the straps.

The original:

We're still working on the price points, but we'll post more info as we have it. Let us know what you think...

Kind regards,
Indy

This is very cool. I’d love to see you do more Indy luggage in the future, and keep us posted on the price.

Keep the straps, no rivet on the loops, lose the D rings.

I'm of the same opinion, Jeff. We'll wait and see what the general consensus is...

Very cool. Are the straps in any way attached to the bag or do they just "float" around the bag and are kept in place by the other strap loops?

There are sewn in tabs at the lower back of the bag as well as the ones at the top (next to the handle) that keep the straps in place.

The bag measures about 18" wide, 16" tall and can expand to about 6.5". There are two main compartments. The rear compartment has pen loops, an extra pocket for diary/phone another for business/credit cards and a large zippered compartment for documents.

I say remove the straps and the rings for a shoulder strap. Indy's bag was an attache style, which is extremely simple in its construction. I have the Jackson Wayne attache which is no longer made but fits that simple style.

Without the straps I think there would be too much strain on the clasp for everyday use. On the movie bag (which was likely completely empty), you can see how much the leather pulls on the clasp.

The way Magnoli is designing the bag, the straps could be removed if you prefer that look. I currently carry a 1940s era satchel bag and all of the weight is supported by the straps wrapping around the bottom of the bag. The clasp is there to keep the flap secure.

Indiana Jeff

You are right. No straps means that the entire bag is supported at the clasp! Might not be good.

In looking over those Jackson bags, those are nice. THey also have a briefcase with straps. I also like the ones that have the shoulder strap. I have a modern nylon laptop bag with handle and strap. Would be nice to have one like that also but in leather.

Reading Magnoli's original post and looking at the screenshot, it looks like there are two good-sized snaps in the lower corners of the flap. Those would relieve the strain on the clasp, in the absence of straps. As he notes, the clasp closely resembles that of the Swaine Adeney Brigg "Westminster 3" model:

Indy's is probably a vintage piece. Perhaps someone at S-A-B can ID it. :-k

Those aren't snaps on the flap of the Westminster bag, those are the buckles for the straps.

I'm not a fan of using a shoulder strap with a leather briefcase so I prefer to not have the D-rings, but I understand having them may be more appealing to the widest audience.

Indiana Jeff

Unfortunately, with the delay, I had to go with another leather bag that fit my bill which has a large buckle clasp but also has a shoulder strap. Let us know when your bag is ready though!

Getting closer! Here's the final prototype:

There may be some minor tweaks to the final production bag, but we're pretty much there now. We'll do a proper photoshoot in a couple of weeks and add the bag to the site for pre-orders. Stay tuned!

Lovely stuff! Is the plan still to connect a strap to it or was that given up?

No, the only straps planned were the two vertical ones (that are not actually in the film, but would have been on the original briefcase before it was modified for production). These are removable though for those wanting the final Raiders look.

I think it works really well either way! Straps are easily added too I would think....Lovely stuff! Can't wait for this one!

Oh, and thanks for sending the Ghost patch too! It's really appreciated! :TOH:

We've opened up pre-orders for the bag here: https://www.magnoliclothiers.com/marsha ... -1166.html

You can use the coupon code RAIDERS36 to pay only 20% of the full price to get in on the run. This will likely be a one-off run as these are quite expensive to produce. So, if you want one of these, this may be your only opportunity. If there isn't enough interest, then we'll cancel the run and refund the down payments. If there are enough pre-orders, then the run will go ahead and once we're close to shipping, we'll send out invoices for the remainder of the payment.

Hi all. Beautiful reproduction, Magnoli!

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere.

Is Indy’s briefcase in Raiders a version of the A-4 Navigators Bag?

It's definitely similar. Even the brass hardware looks like some variations, though I've never seen an exact match to the Raiders briefcase.

How stiff is the leather of the INdy Magnoli briefcase?

When I check in Raiders. the leather used for the briefcase look kinda soft.

Fairly thick, but not especially hard leather, it bends very easily, although will hold the shape around documents and books...I can imagine after several years of usage it would be a lot more flexible around those contained documents too...Will hold it's shape when leant against a wall at an angle, when brand new..
