My quest bullwhip

Hello!

Today I would like to show you something special for me :TOH:

Ever since I started making nylon whips, I wanted to make 12 plt, two bellied Indiana Jones bullwhip from nylon/poly cord. I searched for quite some time and finally I found a local manufacturer of various cords with decent prices. I contacted that company, specified my needs and here we are.

This is the whip I wanted to make since I got into hobby (13 years now):
- 10ft 12 plt Indy bullwhip

- tan coloured poly cord (12 mm cord, which stretches to 7 mm)

- two bellies (4 and 8 plt)

- slight binding at the transition

- lead loaded 8 inch nail as handle, with transition knot at the end of it.

- shot bag of 5,5 mm and 4,5 mm lead balls as a core

- heavy weight - around 970 grams

- white paracord fall and black nylon cracker

- 6 plt wrist loop (6 mm cord, which stretches to 4 mm)

I think that this cord allows for far better Indy whips than paracord. It is wider, so 12 plt and 90 degrees between strands is achievable. It is heavier too. The only disadvantage is 4 plt point.

Wow, that looks amazing! At first glance you'd think it's leather.

Very smooth and tightly plaited!

Flows very well, also!

Hi,

to keep the forum alive, I would like to show some of my recent whips.

I have made few more Indy whips from that cord I have described in my first post. Two dark brown 10 footers that were made to order and one tan 8 footer that is listed in our own Cairo Bazaar.

The 10 footers have 2 plaited bellies and the 8 footer has slightly modified construction and has two bellies and two cordura bolsters.

First photos show the 10 footers and next ones compare them to other whips - 10 footer Indy from the first post, 9ft Indy by Ben Scott, 7ft 12 plt kiphide target bullwhip by Emanuele Carmignani and 6ft 32 plt bullwhip made by me.

I'm plaiting 8 footer in dark brown, I have all the internals now, only the overlay left to do. It will be listed for sale soon as well.

Thanks :TOH:

I have recently sold the Ben Scott bullwhip which you can see in the photos to make room for a 1936 10ft Indy whip from Paul Nolan :whip:

I will also replait 10ft bullwhip from the first post to an 8 footer and put two bolsters into it. And I will keep it.

And the other promised whip is finished.

The same specs as the tan colored - 8ft, 2 bellies, 2 bolsters, 12 plt overlay in dark brown, large heelknot, heavyweight.

It goes to the Cairo Bazaar as well :TOH:

Indy whips are my favourite whips to plait, 10ft especially.

This is the newest one leaving my workshop.
- 10ft 12 plt tan polycord,
- 8 inch lead loaded handle, BB core,
- 2 bellies, 4 plt and 8 plt, 1 codura bolster
- 3ft tapered fall,
- weight: 900 grams.

I included a few photos with my 10ft 1936 Indy whip by Midwestwhips.

Happy cracking :whip: !

I really cannot answer this question. I have been plaiting whips since over ten years now. First ones were just terrible. I don't know how many I did before I was happy with the outcome.
And now it is easier, because there are so much more tutorials.

Fair enough.

I've always wondered if I would have been any good at making whips. Of course, these days, I don't know if my hands would be able to take it, to be honest. :o

Canyon, you just need to give it a go. Watch some YT tutorials, buy a bunch of cord and try. If you don't like it, you won't loose a lot of money. But if you like it, you have a hobby for your whole life!

- 10ft 12 plt brown polycord
- shot loaded core, 2 plaited bellies and 2 bolsters
- extended and additional binding
- 7x6 knots
- thin 4 plt wrist loop

One of the photos show it with classic Indy bullwhip. Notice the handle diameter and knots shapes.

Very nice, Tomek! The polycord is wider than 450 paracord, right? For 450 you need 16 strands for the overlay, but I see the polycord covers all perfectly even at 12.

Re: My quest bullwhip

by tomek9210
Yes, it's much wider and it allows for 12plt overlays. It's nominal size is 12mm and it stretches to around 7mm.

Sadly there are tiny differences between various colors - tan colored cord is stiffer while dark brown is softer and brown is somewhere in between. Therefore brown and dark brown cords stretch a bit more than tan cord, maybe to 6.5mm.

Thinner strands used for ringknots and wristloops don't vary though. I love to make fancy whips with them.

That's very cool, 6.5-7 mm is the perfect width. The varying stretch can be nasty, but if it only differs between colors, then it's perfect!

I'll try to make a video when I am back from my vacation.

The balance is a bit different than on my regular Indy whip - this one is more noseheavy.

And there is much more binding.

In my opinion if there wasn't such material like paracord or other nylon or poly cords there wouldn't be so many people interested in whipcracking and whipmaking. It opened doors for masses to whip hobby. And it is just amazing.

Happy cracking, either you use nylon or leather whip! :whip:

Yes, you're definitely right. Without the nylon whips it is easy to get discourage instantly when trying to get into the hobby.

I remember 20 years ago as a teenager looking at roo whip prices and knowing I would never own one. They were expensive: one 10 footer was as much as both my parents' salaries for a month.

Fortunately, I discovered paracord 7-8 years later and made my first whip. And eventually I ended up making roo hide ones as well. But without paracord it would all have remained a dream.

Cheers,
Bear
