I need to get a tuxedo for a gala ball coming up in March. Obviously, I'm going for the ToD white dinner jacket look. I want to make sure I'm as accurate as possible.

So, what I need to know is what kind of collar did the jacket have?

Did the vest have an open or closed back?

Did Indy wear a belt or suspenders?

I've heard contradictory reports about these issues, and I wanted to get everyone's opinion on this before I get the tux. The ball isn't until the end of March, so I have some time.

BTW, does anyone know who made the tux?

I always thought that tux was very close to the one Bogart wears in Casablanca, almost a bit of an homage.
I think it had a shawl collar, but I'm not sure of the vest. I am sure someone can post screen-grabs.

They do custom made clothes: suits and tuxedos, any style, any fabric; but I'm waiting to read more about the company before I order anything, because I just don't feel comfortable giving my credit card information to a company that I know little about in a foreign country.

He probably wore a belt, I've never seen anyone wearing this kind of suit with suspenders.

Originally I would have agreed with the belt idea, but after viewing that first pic in the link above, I believe you can catch a glimpse of what appear to be white suspenders. It's visable on the right side of Ford's torso, just under the vest. The way the vest folds up due to the position of his body in the pic gives you just enough room to see under the vest and it looks like suspenders to me.

Contact Minnesota Jones or Sergei. They have a white TOD jacket.

GCR is correct. That is definitely a suspender (brace) sticking up from under that jacket. The waistcoat has three satin buttons and (Edited to avoid further embarrassment) I can not tell whether he is wearing cufflinks. In the bottom photo it looks like he is, in the other it looks like he is not.

Indy's does have cufflinks. The design is of the Eye of Ra. (there is an older thread about this)

Thanks for the help. I'll try to get some pics of the tux that evening to post on a thread--probably this one--for your scrutiny...er...I mean enjoyment (yeah that's the ticket). Just kidding.

BTW--That is a red carnation he had on his lapel, right? I'm really bad with flowers.

Yes the TOD collar is much different compared to Casablanca. The TOD collar is a "peaked" collar . The Casablanca collar is a shawl lapel. Finding a "Peaked" lapel is much more difficult than a "Shawl" lapel today as we speak. In fact, a peaked collar is extremely hard to find. Shawls are more common.

I put a ToD Tuxedo together for the QM last May/June....



All the pieces were fairly easy to put together except one...

The Jacket.

I got all the rest of the pieces online at Tuxedo online stores.

Regular Tuxedo Pants with the stripe on the sides
White Suspenders
Tuxedo shirt with NO pleats, it's smooth in front
Regular Tuxedo Black "clip on" tie - it's not a tie-your-own
Black vest (I got one with no back) but it should be 3 button, mine was 4
Red Carnation
Cufflinks and Black Press Studs for the Shirt
Black Tuxedo Shoes

The Jacket was the kicker. It is an Ivory "Peak Lapel" Collar - Single Breasted - One Button Dinner Jacket (with 4 buttons on each sleeve). Bogie's in Casablanca was a Double Breasted Shawl Collar. I ended up having mine custom made by The Magic Wardrobe:

Yes. That's a swell tux, Minnesota!

Actually, the only difference between tuxedo & tails is the jacket, buttons and bowtie (white pique bowtie and white shirt buttons with tails). For an authentic vintage look, the peaked lapels are the only way to go. Shawl lapels came in use during the late 40's - early 50's, as a way of modernising the tux. Folded (classic) shirt collars and clip-on bowties were other "modern" inventions that IMHO should be avoided.

BTW - one should never wear a wristwatch or a belt with a tux or tailcoat!
The shirt should always be plain or piqued, and the shoes made of patent leather. The closer to the Equator, the more reason to don a white jacket. (Which means that yours truly, dwelling near the Arctic Circle, wears an all-black tux .)
