Steele & Jones '36 Horsehide

Hi all,
I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on a new Raiders jacket from Steele & Jones. I already know I want horsehide, but they have two thicknesses, Standard and Thin. I'm tempted by the thin but I plan to give this jacket a rough time so I'm leaning towards the standard. Also, I plan to wear it in the winter months so I'm thinking the standard might be warmer.
Any thoughts would be welcome and appreciated.

Hi Hunter!
Personal opinion? Thin.
Next to Kangaroo and Cape buffalo hide, horsehide is the strongest in tensile strength of tanned animal skin, so a thicker hide isn't going to necessarily give you more 'strength'....just more weight.
You can also more easily layer under a thinner hide for warmth, but not limit your wear time in warmer weather DUE to the heavier horsehide.
Just my opinion, but I own a heavy horsehide Indy by another jacket maker, and it rarely gets out of the closet but in polar temperatures, and that's a shame. It's just too dang heavy!
Great choice!
Regards! Michaelson

Thanks for the reply Michaelson. You make some excellent points. Thin horsehide sounds very seductive.

For whatever it's worth, I just received my Steele and Jones 36 in standard thickness horsehide based on the recommendation from Diego. I had same questions you have. Perhaps try asking him. I'm super pleased with the results and it's not too heavy at all.

You wouldn't happen to have any photos of you wearing yours perhaps?

I’ve been meaning to do that, just moved from one state to another. I will try to do that today or tomorrow.

Hey Hunter, see if these work. Sorry it's the best I can do for now. I have no idea why they're turned, these are my first photos posted and obviously I don't know what I'm doing.

That is a fantastic jacket IJ! Thank you for the photos.
I've contacted Diego and he said he'd use a thin standard for my jacket if I wanted. I'm definitely going to take him up on the offer.
Just so you know when you click on the photos they show correctly.
How long have you had the jacket? It looks like it's breaking in beautifully.

Only had it about 2 months but haven’t worn as much as I’d like, just no time. Diego did recommend light distressing which I wasn’t sure about but he walked me through what he does and I’m glad he did it to the jacket. If you ask him he’ll explain. I did wear it a couple of weeks ago to Jock Lindsey’s when it was in the 60s and i was comfortable, but that’s me. Hope you enjoy the experience and your new jacket.

Just placed the order with Diego for the '36 in horsehide. Diego is curating a standard hide which is on the thinner side. Truly great service. Now comes the wait.
