Double wrap whip holders

Post by bearbeast »

I really wanted to make some belt whip holders for quite some time now and I finally got the chance to before a short vacation to the mountains.

I made them from 10 ounce cowhide, with anthracite 24 line snaps, with strong springs.

I took some liberties with the design, to get an Indy-esque look, but still imprint my style on the holder:

- the belt loop is sewed on, instead of riveted
- there is a cosmetic groove going around the edge of the leather
- the edges are burnished
- the holder is a double wrap

Here are some pics of the holders:

I used one of the holders in a three hour hike one day, and a seven hour hike the other day. They kept the whip nicely in place. The whip's fall was also coiled tightly around the whip, to keep it from unraveling.

Thank for looking! :TOH:

Cheers,
Bear

Nice work. I think double wrap is the only way to go for real world application.

Thanks, Indiana Jeff! I think so too!

They are quite practical like this.

You went for a seven hour hike with a bullwhip... there is clearly more to this adventure than you are telling us. ;)

Weeell, of course there was the occasional swinging over deadly chasms, golden idol snatching and running from the angry locals. But except that I don't think I left out too much...

very nice! I have a problem with the snap staying closed closest to the whip. Any ideas how to fix that?

I had the same problem initially, even though I use strong snaps.

What I did to fix it is: I forcibly bent the strap just below the snap so that it would stay parallel to the belt loop. The snap normally open because the whip pulls the leather strap in a shallow angle in the direction the snap opens. If you bend it to be parallel to the loop, then the pulling direction would be perpendicular.

I hope this helps... If it is not clear, I can make a short video explaining it.
