Just wondering if anyone has tips on making great looking sweat stains on the ribbon?

Baby powder. It's clean, easy to remove... and smell nice. Here's an example of an old west hat I did:

I already know how to give it the dirty look. I need to know how to make authentic looking sweat stains.

How about wearing it in hot weather and sweating in it?

Any help to get ARTIFICIAL sweat stains on the ribbon would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard Baron's Hat uses mineral oil but I'm not brave enough to try it.

Ive used baby oil in the past just brushed on lightly with a pie brush ... worked fine. A little goes a long way

Do you mean "wet" sweat stains? I thought you meant old, dried up sweat staining (salty)... in which case the baby powder method is the best way to achieve this without ruining your hat. You just need more TLC when putting down the powder (in smaller, tighter patches to look more like sweat staining as opposed to general dustiness).

But if you want a "fresh" sweaty look... most, if not all, the methods will permanently stain your hat. Is that what you're after?

I want them to look like this.

Fuller's earth. Works like the baby-powder technique (easily removable) but is brown in color.

Yup .. thats not sweat stains thats dust ingress and marking. IM is correct ... Fullers earth or chalks i believe also works well

something I came up with to put sweat stains on the ribbon.

I boil a small pot of water with a couple hand fulls of salt in it. Stir until the salt dissolves
and pour it in something to work from.

Then I use a small pointed paintbrush to 'paint' where I want the sweat stain on the ribbon. Be careful and look at reference
for placement.
It will more than likely bead up on the ribbon
Resist the urge to wipe it away. Just let it dry
It will look like plain water until it dries and leaves behind the salt.

Go slow. You may need a couple applications to get the effect you want.

A damp paper towel can remove any excess or mistakes.
