I’m looking to get an SA Raiders Whip and I’m wondering, in your opinion, what’s the best one to get? I want the closest thing to what David Morgan would of made for Raiders in the 80’s.

What’s wait times like?

I placed my order (and paid) back in May, and Gio said it was about 3 months queue time until he could work on my whip. I e-mailed him last month for an update and he replied that it should be made sometime in October, so realistically I'll probably receive the whip in early November. So, it's a few months, depending how many orders are ahead of yours.

I almost want to get a used whip that’s well broke in and already distressed looking.

That would be the faster option, if you want to obtain a whip more quickly. Just have to shop around for it.

Heh, Whipwarrior! I talked to Gio on Friday, because I also have a pending order. I think yours must be one of the three whips i am queued behind.

Still, Gio's waiting times are shorter than other whipmakers...

Anyway, I hope you will take some pics when you receive yours and post them here. I really love the new Zorro movies. Well, 'newest'...

Hello Dale,

I've checked your status. There is another four whips that precede your whip:

8ft raiders style
7ft snake
4 ft bullwhip
4 ft bullwhip

I think your whip will be ready in October. Anyway, I'll let you know when I start!

Hmmm, mine is supposed to be a 10 feet, Last Crusade. So I am after you in the queue.

I have waited about 25 years for my first real leather whip, so I am in no hurry. A few more weeks I can definitely wait!!

I picked up my first whip about 23 years ago: a cheap 4-plait red & white checkered cowhide bullwhip with a wooden swivel handle, purchased for $30 at a farm and ranch supply store in Louisiana. Then I was throwing my first David Morgan Indy just four years later. If it's not made of leather, then it's not a real whip, as I've often said. Personally, I wouldn't be caught dead with a nylon paracord whip (aka - glorified jump rope). Trust me, once you've enjoyed a quality kangaroo whip, nothing else compares.

I cannot wait to get it! To see how it rolls out and how (I am guessing) it smells. I love leather stuff in general.

So far I have only played around with paracord ones I have made myself (and still make them). It has been a nice cheap substitute, but I am sure you are completely right. Cannot beat roo leather.

In the future, if money allows, I might try my hand at making a leather one. But it is an expensive hobby...

Kangaroo leather is magnificent, and it's one of my favorite scents in the world. It has a curiously sweetish smell that is wholly unique to kangaroo, but unfortunately fades too quickly. The odor of fresh kangaroo hide has the addictive effect of prompting more whip purchases to enjoy the scent again. It's a gateway drug - and an expensive one at that!

Oh, man.... Now I am even more excited!

My "to buy" gear list is already long and expensive. If I will want multiple whips in addition... Phew, RIP my budget!

And I do have an addictive personality. It is the collectors trait... Always the excitement of a new purchase, the wait and finally the unwrapping of the new acquisition.

Better start saving, I guess...

Saying that Indy gear is an expensive hobby is the understatement of the year, but thanks to the multitude of vendors, there's an Indy item for every budget. It all depends on what you're willing to spend. Suffice it to say, the bullwhip is probably the most expensive item of the lot, alongside genuine Alden boots. Thankfully, much of the gear today is infinitely more screen accurate than the offerings 20 years ago. You can literally cherry pick the gear that most appeals to your sense of Indy style. Enjoy the thrill of the hunt!

He was apprenticed by Morgan and knows his stuff. But be prepared to pay top dollar and wait a lot longer than his quote.

I didn’t have to wait longer than his quote.

Hmmm, Whipwarrior... Well, the whip I already have (well, will have...). If I will want more than one, then: "Here I gooo, spending again!"

The other expensive piece of gear is The Fedora... Except the Akubra, most manufacturers have them starting from $350... up to $700, even $1000.

I wouldn't have expected the hat to be among the most expensive items to get.

I had the exact same thought back in the late 90's. It was amazing to think that a fedora could cost more than a custom-made Wested leather jacket - but it does!

Last year I bought a very nice custom Raiders hat in 100% beaver from AdVintage Hats in Germany, and it was the same price as the factory HJ Poet I bought back in the day. A quality fedora that won't break the bank - yet still costs a bit more than a fine leather jacket. Some things never change.

It is way easier for me to buy from inside Europe. The shipping + taxes of ordering from the US or Australia would be too much.

The wait time for AdVintage is a few months, based on my experience. I placed my order last year in February, and received the hat in May (about 4 months total, depending on the queue). Excellent customer service, and a very fine quality hat.

Anyway there is quite a while until I can gather some funds for new acquisitions.

But I am extremely excited to have found this european retailer!

Anyone have any experience with the trinity whip company? I think I’m gonna go for a darker whip closer to what we see in LC. Ultimately I’ve always wanted a David Morgan but it doesn’t look like they offer darker colors.

Blake from Trinity Whip Co. makes some fine whips. I own 7 of his with an 8th due to arrive tomorrow. His whips handle very nicely, and he's very open to working off your personal specs. And his wait times are usually not terribly long.
