Can you make an HJ hat work if you're only 5'6" tall?

Post by senorjacob »

Hey all,
I'm in a quandary and wondering if anyone here has had a similar experience. I went to the HJ store here in London and tried on an HJ Raiders hat. The hat itself is a beauty to behold. Unfortunately it looks a little too large on my head. I have a Fed IV Akubra and that hat looks more or less proportional to my body. But for some reason the HJ just looks out of proportion -- too big. Maybe it's the front pinch or something else, I'm not sure. I ordered the lower crown height as well.

I'm 5'6" with a slim build. Does anyone else have an HJ and that same body type?

I don't share your body type, but I have suggestions based on all the info I've soaked up through the years. The Raiders style, even adjusted for hat size, can be a lot of hat, and HJs usually have the wide Raiders brim, and the new versions have the tall and full crowns. Smaller people - especially slim ones - seem to do better with the Last Crusade and Crystal Skull brim and crown heights. The fact that the Fed IV seems more right supports that, because it is designed to reflect the Crystal Skull hat.

The pinch is more likely to effect how flattering the hat is with your face. I find that most people look good with the Raiders pinch, including guys with narrow faces.

My conclusion is that you would likely be able to pull off an HJ with Crystal Skull dimensions, with a Raiders bash.

Chewie has some good advice. another thing to consider (especially since you're in London and can try things out without committing to buy) would be their "new" Raiders block, which is a quarter inch lower. That might make the difference for you.

Thanks guys. Yeah the hat I tried on is the lower crown version. If the whole hat could just shrink by %5, it would be perfect. But as it, my head is just too small to make it work.

It sounds like Chewie's advice is the way to go, then.

I'm only 5"5" and medium build and I wear mine daily, to the point if I'm not wearing it, people notice "that"

Wear the hat and enjoy, I've never worried about the height and after awhile you won't either.

5' 8" and, with the exception of the Indy IV hat Steve made for me, I wear a Raiders style fedora almost exclusively. I'm so used to it, sometimes it even looks small. No-one has ever claimed it's too big or too tall. :TOH:

I am in agreement with Croft and Ridgerunner. I am 5'4". Wear my raiders all the time. Love wearing it and people can tell and also notice when I don't have it.

I wasn't asking about Raiders hats in general but the HJ Raiders in particular. It is not only tall but the entire proportions are larger than my fed iv akubra by a long shot. I love the hat. Wish I could wear it. I have a picture with me wearing it that shows clearly what I'm talking about but I don't want to post because I don't want anyone to think the HJ isnt right for them. It's perfect for a lot of people but it's too big on me. I wish I were 6'1" with fords head size. Just not.

Happy to PM the pic though if you're interested.

To be perfectly honest, I think I just have a small head.

Post the picture. We're used to it. Loads of people have done so to get opinions and illustrate points.

After going back and forth with the fine folks at Herbert Johnson, we were finally able to resolve the sizing issues. I still don't know if this hat is too big for my body type. But I love the hat and am wearing it anyway.

Let me know what you guys think.

Looks good from here. I say enjoy it, wear it and soon just like others you'll only look "off" without it.

Agreed. I think the proportions on you look very similar to HF's in Raiders. Wear it in good health.
