Indy shirt alternatives

Hi everyone,

I just called LLBean to order a few cotton poplin field shirts and was informed that they are out of stock in my size (XL Tall-Tan) until fall. AHHHHHHH! Any suggestions on alternative shirts? I already know about Peter at Wested making the shirt and pants. And that's a possibility. Thanks.

Keith

P.S. When they are available again you can bet I'll be getting a few.

With Noel Howard no longer in the picture, Wested still working out the design for their version, and L.L. Bean out of stock for months, I'd say head to your nearest Army-Navy or Military surplus store and see what you can find there. Their offerings may not be as accurate as some of the shirts mentioned above, but it'll hold you over until Wested starts selling theirs or L.L.Bean re-stocks...what ever comes first. And you can bet anything you might be able to find in an Army-Navy store will probably be pretty cheap.

I mentioned this before on another post, but check the indygear mainpage - http://www.indygear.com/gear/shirt.shtml, it lists a lot of options, plus color comparisons. One of the better ones I've seen for the $ is the Cabela's safari shirt - it comes in the color "stone..."

I too, mentioned another possibility in a thread some months back. Here it is again:

It's another poplin shirt, with epaulets and pleated pockets, and this one comes in a "stone" color which looks more like Indy's. (Actually, the true color looks slightly yellowish than the picture on the orvis website shows) The only downside is that there's an extra pocket on the left shoulder and buttons on the elbows for rolling up the sleeves.

You can find it at www.orvis.com. It's a "bush shirt", and the item number is PG21LE. They run $80, and also come in olive and khaki.

Happy Hunting! :D

I've been dying to get my hands on a Bill's Khaki shirt.

The Cabela's is a very light khaki. In some the movie shots, Indy's shirt looks like this color because of the lighting. BTW, you can buy 2 Cabelas safari shirtsfor the price of 1 Orvis and have $30 left over to buy a MK VII original bag from Soldier of Fortune in th UK. It's 10 pounds, or about $19.00 Mine just arrived today and it's in very good condition. For those that demand screen accuracy, it may not be a good choice. there is a very faded black band about 1/2" wide around the bottom seam. I don't have a problem with it because it's barely noticiable, and it's a part of it's history.

I have two of the Orvis shirts - khaki and stone - and I just love em! I wore my khaki shirt under my camos all season long when I went out bow hunting this year. Its a very durable shirt - very appropriate for an adventure. The stone is definitely closer to the movie color. I have asked my mother (a retired home economics teacher) to modify mine by continuing the pleats down the front on both sides (above & below the pockets) and to cut away the pocket on the left shoulder. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

I do like the look of that "Bill's Khaki Shirt" though. Price is very comparable to Orvis' as well.

Warm Regards,

Erick

Ohio,
If you can, post a pic of that shirt when it's done. I would like to see how well these shirts can be modified.
Thanks.

There are only two types of Stupid questions: The first one is the one that's not asked. The second one is the type you've asked enough times you should already know the answer to.

info?

Anybody ever tried Boy Scout troop leader shirts?

Boy Scout shirts come with a nifty "Boy Scouts of America" patch over one of the pockets.

When I stopped being a Boy Scout leader, I took the patches off my shirt, and I had a pretty decent adventure shirt.

I just ordered a Cabelos safari shirt yesterday in the tan. The price you can't beat. I went to Orvis on saturday in Manchester Vermont - they did not have the Safari they carry in stock. Probably good that they didn't looks like I saved some money.

The Cabelas shirts look very nice(I have 4 of them in Tan,stone and olive) but they are DEFINATELY NOT summer shirts! The high polyester content makes them unbearable hot!

Well - currently in the northeast it has been a very cold winter - so a little heavier shirt will be ok. I'll have to work on a back up plan for summer.

Thanks for the tip.

Tampa, FL is not the coolest place in summer and I did not find me Cabela's any hotter than any other shirt. It does have a 35% Dacron content but the shirt IS light. You might consider getting it one size larger than you normally wear. Then again my judgement might be clouded because in Tampa we aircondition everything. :D

You might try the short-sleeved version of the Cabelas shirts. I usually roll up the long sleeves to make them more bearable in the heat and humidity down here. By the way, Cabelas just added a light blue (cool blue) colored shirt to their selection of Safari Shirts.

I don't know which Cabela shirt you're talking about, because the Safari shirt they have is absolutly not a Summer shirt. It's perfect for the early Spring and Fall... or on rainy summer days. But it's useless as a shirt on humid days.

Pure Cotten Poplin is the only way to go on hot days.

Has anyone tried the Bills Khakis vintage poplin shirts. They look pretty good online. Which color is the most accurate, the stone or khaki? Inquiring minds want to know.

Maybe I'm accustomed to heat and humidity. Nevertheless, their shirts are also offered in short sleeves. That's why I suggested trying them. You'd be stylish all year round.
