Can a leather jacket be tailored?

I found a good Indy style jacket (it's a us wings one) for a really low price (like $10) at goodwill. Unfortunately it's an XL where I wear a M. Do you think I'd be able to get it altered to fit or is the size gap too extreme?

In my experience, more that a one size difference will produce poor results. Great find, though. Wish I had your luck.

It's possible, but it would take a lot of work. Still $10, who cares if it fits or not! Sell it and use the funds to get one that does fit. It'll probably work out better for you that way...

Someone out there is looking for an XL. Unload it for some cash toward one that fits. :)

Depends on what it is, condition, how much... I'd say maybe. I'd love a Signature Series. But I suppose that's what the Cairo Bazaar is for.

Agree with what's already been said. To alter a jacket that much it would have to be essentially completely disassembled and the parts used to make a new jacket from scratch (if you can even find someone to do the work, leather tailors are few and far between). The cost of the alternation would probably be more than a new jacket, and I doubt it would every feel quite right.

If the jacket is in good shape and is indeed a US Wings, scoop it up for $10 and resell it. The proceeds will get you closer to getting a jacket that fits.

Regards,

Indiana Jeff

US Wings Indy jackets sizing seem to be all over the place for me. Signature Series is a XXL. Legend is a XXL Long except for the SL jacket which I wear a XXL regular. Imported Legend are 3XL for me. I bought a Roo Legend jacket that was a XXL but fit like a XL.

I have just personally found their sizing to be very inconsistent.

As far as alterations, I would only go with sleeve length as the one I would consider.

Thanks for the responses guys. I ended up giving it to a fellow Indy fan who fills it out better. After having so much luck finding it for so little, it would feel wrong to try and sell it for more just because it didn't fit me. My friend was thrilled anyways. :TOH:
