Well, they have arrived. And I have to say they are GORGEOUS..... from opening the packaging and seeing the lovely little cardboard boxes they come in to opening them and seeing the glasses cases they are in the quality jusy oozes.

Image

Image

Top top work Indy Magnoli....Opening the first glasses case reveals a pair of glasses you would and im sure WILL be proud to own....I know I am.

Image

Im not a glasses wearer (yet, but im sure it coming. My 20-20 isnt what it used to be) but they fitted me perfectly right out of the box and feel very comfortable. The tortoise shell frames linking to the gold arms is glorious, Every tiny detail has been crafted to perfection and after only a couple of minutes I forgot I was wearing them (yes I looked around wondering where I had put them down).

Image

The arms are very comfortable and form fitting with a nice amount of spring in the ends. Being wrap around ends they feel very secure on your head (great for the active wearer) but dont feel tight at all.

Image

Sorry about the pics of me wearing them. I was trying to look presentable.... epic fail I know.

Image

Image

Image

The sunglasses are equally as impressive (being the exact same frames). Ive never been able to find a pair that feel comfortable and suit me.....UNTIL NOW!!!!

Image

NO?.......... oh

Excellent work Magnoli Clothiers. I am a Fan.

Those look great!

Can't wait to see mine! Although, they left Singapore 5 days ago, and apparently, aren't even in Japan yet....Not sure how DHL are shipping them, maybe they have one bloke swimming, one handed to Japan? I'm pretty sure it doesn't take 5 days to fly from Singapore to Tokyo......Unless you're blind.. :-k

Good stuff! Shame about DHL..... :whip:

I like the look of those, it's a classic vintage style. I actually wear glasses most of the time, so I'm wondering how much it would cost to get my prescription lenses put into those frames. Hmmm, perhaps I'll look into that.

Thank you Sir! :TOH:

I'll be going to get the lenses sorted tonight I think, should be about 3000 yen at the local glasses shop......

I wonder how long it'll take to get the lenses sorted out......Never done this....

Yes indeed!

I'd suspected Japan would ace it, because, well, glasses are used here by so many people, they'd NEED to have a good hand on it..

It cost 3000yen (30 dollars) and took 40 minutes, ten of which was the eye test...Excellent stuff....

20-20 vision isn't as impressive as I'd hoped, but I guess that means that my eyes weren't as bad as I thought they were....Seeing clearly is nice...But not quite as dramatic a change as I'd expected!

Still, that said, it's lovely to be able to really USE these glasses for something now..I wore them at work today, and had some nice compliments from the students and staff, so I look forward to being able to use them more regularly from now on in!

Great stuff Indy, really well done on these....(I'm now also considering a pair of the Savile Row ones as well...Just to have a good look at the real thing..) :TOH:

$30 for lenses is a great price.

I suspect it's part-due to the competition here from contact lenses? The glasses sellers have to compete, since people tend to dislike wearing glasses (in general), and choose contacts more here....

So, they lowered the price on as much as they can....I was impressed though...Even back home in London, I'd never have gotten all that in the time I did, for that low a price...

Well done Japan! :notworthy:

True, with the competition from the contact and Lasik surgery trade, there's some pretty hot competition between the glasses vendors for customers these days.

We see TV commercials all the time by companies wanting to sell you not one but TWO pairs of glasses in an hour, eye exam $50...and guarantees galore!

I remember the day when exams were $75 and glasses were in the hundreds....and no discount.

It's been interesting to watch all these changes in my lifetime, as I've been wearing glasses for over 50+ years.

My practice for years has been to look for gold filled frames in antique stores that are NOS items from optometrist's estates, then having lenses installed. I've been fortunate to find some fine wire rims that I wear.

I would have to disagree. The $ is so much different in Asia. $30 to them is probably high.
And competition isn't really a factor.

Vision impaired fall into all sorts of categories.
A lot of folks simply can't wear contacts.
And a lot of folks are not physically eligible laser.
And a lot of folks simply don't want to be bothered.

I've been nearsighted since 14yo.
When I could afford it, I went contacts .
When technology caught up, I finally deemed laser doable.
One of the best decisions I've ever made.
But, it's not for everyone.
Of course, 5years later, (and 5years older...)
I'm now wearing reading glasses typing this.
(And have 2 pairs of frames on order... ;) )

I dunno...But 30 dollars here isn't expensive....(3000 yen).....

The rest is just what I've seen...Glasses shops tend to have very reasonable rates across the board here...Perhaps it has nothing to do with contact lens wearers, but that's what made sense to me....

I can't comment on the rest of your post though.... ;)

Have any of you seen the movie, 'Regarding Henry' where Ford plays a business man falls in love, I am sure some of you have.

He wears glasses that look identical except the ear pieces don't wrap around the ear.

Well my Professor's "sun" glasses came today.
These are nice, the below pic's don't do them justice, do to being inside. But this weekend I'll try to get a shot out doors.
Indy's previous pic's are spot on to what I held in my hands.

Only one question, is there a way to loosen them up, the part that wraps around the ear really pulls them in tight. Not that there right on top of the ol eye balls, but they feel tight. Only way to describe them.
FYI Indy say's that I can gently adjust them. \:D/
Check out the pic's. I'm very pleased, thanks again Indy for producing these, there awesome.

I've worn wire glasses frames with cable temples well for over 40 years, and like our fedoras, they're something you have to mess and fiddle around with to make them finally fit your ears correctly.

Just experiment, and you'll hit a 'sweet spot' eventually. ;)

Yup...I've found the ear hook behind the ear hurt quite a bit, so I softly bent the metal just a touch until the pressure lessened...It won't bend easily, so don't use strength to do it, but a little at a time, again and again, until it fits your head worked fine for me...

They're now very easy to wear, and the shape of the hook isn't especially "bent" looking either, something that I was trying to avoid when bending them....

A little at a time, until it fits... :TOH:

Thanks for posting about this--mine are now fitting even more comfortably!

The staff at LensCrafters sure liked the look of these glasses when I had prescription lenses put in last weekend--most of them there that day came over to look at them at some point or another.

Glad it helped! And yeah, in the glasses shop I took mine into as well, there was a fair bit of interest in them...They told me that Japanese people don't generally favour the rounded, longer shaped glasses, and usually go for wider and shorter, narrow frames...So the ones I had were "rare" to them....I'd not thought about it, but it does make sense..Given the small differences in eye shape here....

And yeah, mine were an easy switch as well....

I just got sent my order of the Savile Row originals that Ford wore in the movie....

I mention this, because now that I have those in hand, I can directly compare the Magnoli ones..

They are superb.....There are very few differences between them, in all honesty...The Magnoli version has slightly thinner rims, and the nose piece is slightly differently shaped, with less of an angle to it...That's honestly about the only major differences between them, and I have to congratulate Magnoli once more on the design...It is superb.

The Savile Row pair DO feel nicer to wear, due to the ear hook metal being far, far softer..It means there's no problem with adjusting...They'll naturally do it in time due to the soft metal used...And they're a touch lighter feeling on the nose than the Magnoli's...

But that's about all....

Once again, well done Indy! These really are an exceptional copy of some fine glasses! :TOH:

I've been wearing mine daily since January with prescription lenses, and they've held up fine. The gold coloring is fading in parts on the cables that go around your ears. That's my only complaint (well, that and I wish there was a slightly wider option for those of us who are bigger guys)--but it's not a stark contrast, and isn't seen by anyone when wearing them.

Best wishes,

Same here. Daily use for months now (office, travelling, in the field) - and as Luke pointed out: no issues besides the fading on the cables. Comfortable and durable.

I always install shrink tubing on my frames with cables.

You can obtain clear shrink tubing in the proper size from your optometrist. I buy them by the bag, then install them myself.

It protects the cable, and your ears as well. ;)

Just a word to the wise.
