Montana Peak Bash - Let's See 'Em, Scout!

Indy didn't only wear a fedora! He also wore... a Boy Scout campaign, slouch, or military-style wide-brimmed hat with a "Montana peak" bash. Granted, it was a younger Indy in Last Crusade; but still, it was Indy, and he was wearing a Smokey the Bear hat... decades before there was a Smokey the Bear.

While there are hundreds of fedora topics on this forum, I haven't been able to find a topic devoted to Indy's scouting lid. Or at least, not a topic with pictures.

So let's see 'em: post a pic or three of your Montana peak, lemon-squeezer, Smokey the Bear, forest ranger, state police, Boy Scout, RCMP, doughboy bashed hats. Oh, but not just a photo of the hat; do, please, include photos of yourself proudly wearing your Fred MacMurray in Follow Me, Boys or Clifton Webb in Mister Scoutmaster or Nelson Eddy in Rose Marie or Roy Chapman Andrews exploring Mongolia hat. Because almost anybody can look cool wearing a fedora. But the truly cool kids are the ones who can pull off the Montana peak style. Like teen Indy.

And let us know what kind of hat we're looking at -- you know, hat-geek details.

(As for me... I only wish I could look a fraction as cool, or as haughty, as Clifton Webb in Mister Scoutmaster. I'll have to settle for an over-the-hill Roy Chapman Andrews wannabe impersonation... but as they say, put up or shut up, so I'll put up... and then I'll shut up.)

Great hat and the puggaree band is perfect! Like your boots too! When I was a kid (around 10 yrs. old), a friend of my dad's gave me a WWII Marine Corps. Drill Instructor's hat (looked very much like yours) for Christmas! I was in Heaven! My mom and the friend's wife didn't understand the gift, but my dad and his friend did. As dad's buddy told his wife: "Hey, it's what the kid wanted!" I wore that hat for years end and loved it to the end (which unfortunately was a theft from a school dance in my senior year of high school)! But, like Indy and his memories of his beloved dog: "I have fond memories of that hat!

I would truly like to get a nice beaver version but styled more with the RMCP bash where the bash is reversed from this version. However, I would not turn down a really good 'Doe Boy' WWI version either. As I recall Miller Hats used to carry a neat version of the 'Doe Boy' with an turned down brim....I think it was rabbit. I will have to look and see.

Anyway, love your hat and outfit and for the record (not to disrupt this thread); what boots do you have on? Thanks. W>

This is how I dress while camping, on occasion.

Pretty grand look.

I have two Scouting campaign hats. They both have a light khaki puggaree on 'em now.
Not going for any kind of screen accuracy, but they sure have a Last Crusade feel.

This is the name tag sewn in the hat above.

One of the best shots I have of my moth eaten Scouting campaign hat, which I should mention
only cost me five bucks at a thrift shop

ALSO has an excellent photobomb by my lovely lady.

The hat's puggaree was also found at a thrift store, for a buck.

-I got 'em to be period accurate working on western movie sets.

That photo where you're wearing the holster... I thought that was how all Canadians dressed. Turns out the Official Uniform of Canada has changed to a knit cap, fleece jacket or vest, scruffy denim jeans, and a tightly gripped Tim Horton's cup.

Okay, now this topic is coming to life! See, guys? Montana peak hats are cool! Pull yours out of the closet or basement and show 'em off!

You're thinking of Seattle in the 1990s, but with a Starbux cup.

The holster, btw, was a Costumebase Indy holster from that auction site. It's a fairly good one but after a few years of putting heavy replica pistols in it, the belt fastener hardware has broken. Pretty good for the cheap price and for being faux leather.

Awesome. I like to camp like that too. My everyday look includes a cowboy hat but sometimes I'll go with a retro/indy look. Whats in your holster?

I had one when I was in scouts. Got it from an Army surplus store. I just had to make it part of my uniform because I had been made a patrol leader, I couldn't stand the ball caps and berets, and the hat looked so cool in LC and Norman Rockwell's paintings. I wish I still had it sometimes, but when I moved from Scouts to football, I passed it on to the next patrol leader.

Thinking I need to wear it at an out upcoming campout with the cub scouts.

So I decided my BSA hat was in too nice of a condition for field use so it’s now my hat for regular meetings. But I found this one on eBay- it’s not BSA, but was listed as a pre-WWII US Army campaign hat, appears to be fur felt. $20+ shipping+ it came with the Army cap piece, which I replaced with this more-appropriate pin. From today’s den hike in the mountains:

I don't think I've seen a "real" felt Montana peak ranger or scout hat "in the wild" other than maybe one worn by the occasional highway patrol officer or forest ranger. Even then, the police and rangers often tend to wear pressed straw versions anymore.

Are these all hats that were originally creased in the Montana style, or have you reshaped any of them?

1922 Stetson No. 1 Quality sold from my hometown. Some unfortunate moth damage on this example. I'd like to Have this hat cloned, though I have worn it on occasion.

Thanks, David. These are all original BSA campaign / scoutmaster hats with the exception of the very top one with the gold pin, which is a preWWII US Army campaign hat; all original creases. They’re all fur felt. I wear them at all of our outdoor scouting events, but my (9yr old) son and I are the only ones in the area that do so, unfortunately. I tend to bend the front down and wear them cavalry-style (a’ la “In Pursuit of Honor”) rather than DI/Smokey-style.

They are:
Top row 1) Unknown manufacturer olive drab 1930s (?) US Army with copper-colored ribbon. It has a 5” crown and the brim is between 2 7/8” and 2 3/4. It has the thickest felt and is medium floppy.
2nd row 2) Unknown manufacturer chocolate brown BSA with dark brown leather band. 5” crowns, brim varies between 2 7/8” and 3”. Medium felt thickness and floppiness.
3) Unknown manufacturer medium brown BSA with grey/brown leather band. 5” crown, 3” brim. Medium felt thickness, stiff as a board.
Far left 4) Stetson sage green with gold/copper cloth ribbon. 5” crown with star-shaped vent holes on the sides, 2 1/2” brim with 2 row stitching. Thin felt, stiff but not super stiff.
Far right 5) Stetson olive drab (1960s) with olive drab cloth ribbon. 4 1/2” crown with star-shaped vent holes on the sides, brim with 2 row stitching ranges between 2 1/2” and 2 3/4”. Thin and medium floppy.
Bottom row 6) Stetson 1940s dark OD (almost brown) with OD cloth ribbon. 4 1/8” crown with star-shaped vents on back and sides, 2 1/2” to 2 3/8” brim with 2 row stitching. Thin and super floppy.
7) Unknown manufacturer OD BSA with brown cloth ribbon; ribbon has BSA fleur de lis every 2”- really cool looking. 4 1/2” crown star-shaped side vents, 3” - 2 7/8” brim. Thin and stiff.
