Dimensional cut brim

Post by Carolina Tom »

Been away awhile, but glad to be back! I'm thinking of getting a new hat and was wondering how common dimensional cut brims were back in the 20's and 30's. :-k Is this something that was common, uncommon or non-existent? If it was around, was it more prevalent in one region than another? I would love to see some period pics too! Thanks, Tom

As far as I can tell, not common at all. I'm not even sure they existed. But I haven't seen any period pictures with noticeably dimensional brims, nor have I ever come across any examples.

Ive seen somewhere (I think someone here posted some long ago) some vintage ads for fedoras that offered dimensionally cut brims. Probly for the higher class versions as it seems to be a cosmetic design to suit certain face shapes.

I think they certainly existed, but I think the non-dimensional cut brim was FAR more common.

Thanks guys! Since my original question, I did a bit of research and found that back in the day, the dimensional brim was apparently an option on HJ hats. Would this explain its presence on Indy's hat, or was this simply a wardrobe decision based on Ford's face shape? Just curious . . .

For the Raiders hat it has generally been believed the dimensional cut was chosen to serve the character/filming to make it easier to light HF's face, while keeping a wider brimmed fedora.
