Marc's Raiders hat block

Post by Fedora »

I just finished- I think, Marc's Raiders hat block. I reblocked a cowboy hat I had on hand and here is what it looks like. Now, Marc, if you are reading this, please email me. sdelk@cableone.net I can't get the PM to work right now.

I took a vintage block from ebay and with the belt sander, and vibrator sander, and a little elbow grease, sized it down from a 7 3/8 to his size. Plus, I transformed it into a Raiders block in the process. If anyone decides to do this on their own, be sure and get a larger block than what you want to end up with. I should have considered this method initially instead of the bondo/wood hybrid. Of course, I had no clue as to what I needed in crown shape, so using bondo(you can always add back if you err) possibly was necessary now that I think about it. Now that I know basically what the block should look like( through trial and error), it is easier to just use a larger vintage block. And it looks so much better. The hat that the link takes you to http://public.fotki.com/Fedora/hats/mar ... ock-1.html is a cowboy hat, and the brim is 2 7/8 all the way around. The crown height is 5 1/4 bashed, on the sides, and the block is 5 3/4 open crown. I still have to cut 1/4 an inch off the bottom since Marc wants his to be 5 1/2. I like mine this tall though. regards, Fedora

PS Peruse around that linked site to see the block, still unfinished, and some more views of the final product.

Now how can I express my feelings here in a language that is not my mother tongue, as I don't even know how to explain in German???

THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH STEVE!!!

This just beats everything a gearhead (especially a hat fanatic as me) could ever wish for Christmas! I consider myself so very happy...

It looks outstanding.

Truly yours,

Marc

Outstanding job.

And Marc, it's you we have to thank coming up with the Auto-Cad block.

Great job Fedora! That hat has got a great looking shade of brown to it as far as I can tell from the lighting.

Fedora, I'm 'bondo-ing' my block that I finally got in from Ebay. And I think I have the shape that I want from another thread. But, I think MK said something about how he wished Petersbros. blocks were "lower" in the rear of the crown??? Is that what you did on yours?

Thanks,

Skip

Thanks. Indy skip wrote:"But, I think MK said something about how he wished Petersbros. blocks were "lower" in the rear of the crown??? Is that what you did on yours?" No, my block and Marc's block are basically the same front and back. I just drop the back of the hat down more when I am styling it. I can drop it down real low with no taper. regards, Fedora
