Has anyone bought a lid from Jason Lavallée fedoraiders? He sells the SOC fedora. His hats look really nice and I've had good correspondence with him. I'm planning to buy one Just wondering if anyone bought one and what did they think of the hat?

I've had several. Me head shape tends to miss-shappen the brim and it ended up ruining the "look" but the last one I have, I used some light western felt stiffener and worked thd brim with that....
aside from that-
This thing is AMAZING! The attention to detail is incredibly accurate. You can watch the entire Streets of Cairo scenes with it in your hand and position it according to what you see on screen and it will match frame by frame. Every dust spot, even under the brim, is there. The bash is just as perfect and the felt quality and color are spot on. The ribbon and bow and distressing on the ribbon is in a class all by itself. Jason took that look on as his specialty and his dedication to preserving that particular look is unmatched by anyone else. If I could afford it, I'd by another but I thought he was no longer making them. If you have the opportunity to get one (and can afford it ;) ) definitely get one! BUT, I warn you, make sure that is the look you want. It has every nuace from the buldging mushroom, boxy, shrunk and collasped in the heat crown along with all the dirt, sweat and dusty and you have to appreciate that particular hat with as much passion as Jasom puts into making them.

Here are some shots I took this morning...keep in mind that I am somewhat molding the brim due to way my head distorts it and we have not had any sun.......and you can`t show off a Streets of Cairo hat well without sunlight! #-o

Here you go....sent him an email, here is his response. W>

Hello!

I received my felt batch from Herbert Johnson since yesterday.

For this batch of felt and because I'm very busy by my work and my family,
I asked them to sew the leather inside the felt and I make the remaining.

I will have a size 57, 58 59 60cm.

The price is 400$USD + Shipping!

Thanks for your interest!

I have had four of Jason`s hats. Two were bought directly from him and two were second hand. They are one of the few items in my collection that deem worth the price.
My apologies for not taking measurements yet as I brought the tape and forgot the hat then brought the hat and forot the tape! #-o
Definitely today sometime!
The size has been perfect. This last one I got (it was second hand hat)is actually a size bigger than what I wear and was described as a "slightly larger 59" and it was. I stayed with this one as the brim dimensions were larger and I felt leaned more to the look on my wider ear to ear head. 2 1/2 inch sides do not look good on me and tend to make hats look small on me. Kills the entire SoC look IMO. I think I remeber Jason saying he adjusts his hats to nail the look on his own head and he definitelt has a long oval shape. if you have one too, it will be just pop it on and go. If your like me with a wider head, you will need to play with it! He use to send videos of how to adjust it and get it the way you want....don`t know if he still does that as it is not really a priority for him any longer. Too bad!

Hello Everyone!

Thanks Gorak for your good words about my hats, I appreciate this very much!

After one year of waiting, I finally received my order from Herbert Johnson but this order was very expensive due to the exchange of money and astronomical fees from UPS.

Now, I'm very excited to start making of these hats.

Thanks for your interest!

Here are some outdoor sunlight shots of this cool hat!

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h304/ ... cgf01d.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I was asked by several people for dimension so her they are:
CROWN: Front 4 1/2
Back 4
Sides 5
BRIM: Front/Back 3
Sides 2 3/4

This is a larger hat, size 59 so the dimensions are accordingly so to the size. I normally wear a 57 but that hat had 2 1/2 inches on the sides and just didnt look right to me. I also took out the sweatband and put in a smaller one but when I forced it into place, it ended up "wonking" the back of the brim and so I ended up putting the original seatband back in but the back of the brim hasn`t tamed yet! Thats why you might see some loose threading around the ribbon as I havent cleaned it up yet as I want to make sure it is going to sit like I want where I can work with it.
Also, the wierd thing is that the distressing doesn`t really show up like it appears in person. In some shots you can see it slightly but then in others it looks completely gone. In person, it is very thick and noticable. My wife won`t let me wear it to church.! :P

So I bought two hats for Jason! One SOC and one Peruvian. I love both these hats and they end my search for the perfect lid, especiallly the SOC. I highly recommend his hats if you can get one. Jason is a really good guy. Good communication worked with my requests and specifications for my order. Thanks Jason

Nice to see that Jason is still making these. I'm not after the perfect SA Indy-hat myself but i've always been amazed how great work and detail he puts into his hats.

Not to take anything away from FR and his work, which is probably the best SoC likeness you can buy, but if anyone is looking for a more cost effective option, I would suggest buying a Christy, Fed IV, or another thrifty option, and with the tutorials and advice threads sprinkled around the forum, you can make a good likeness of the SoC yourself. Holt made a great SoC from a Fed IV. Ultimately, the hat will become your SoC hat and not HF's, but it will still retain the flavor.
