For the record..

I still get emails asking me about producing bullwhips, so let me please set the record straight.
I NO LONGER MAKE WHIPS OF ANY SORT
The last order I took for a customer was a long time ago and I have no intention of starting up again.
To be honest I am in denial of having been involved with whips at all.
I gave up any interest in making whips after watching the whipping scenes in Jango Unchained.
On watching the disturbing scenes in 12 Years a Slave I destroyed my personal whips.
Please do not email me enquiring about whips.
Thank You.

I just want to respond because this has come up before. 1st off I want to say if that is your opinion please stay firm and that is ok. I am not trying to argue or try to change your mind. I think you raised a good topic that could/ maybe should be discussed ...again. I understand how people could see and think about how whips have been misused in the past...but they were meant for teaming animals...and not for striking them. Christ was whipped with a flogger thay had little metal fish hooks on the end. Whips have been misused...but I dont feel that it should be a difinitive view point on looking at a whip.
Objects that are misused are not forever evil because an evil spirited person used it. Like Iron.Iron is just rock in the earth. Once refined could be turned into a sharp knife. A thugish person could rob and murder with it...that is trur...but a doctor can save lives with it. Like Iron whips are not good or bad...that resides in the person using it. Like guns...in the wrong hands are terrible, but in the right hands feeds his family with it or protects.
I like whip cracking. I for one, when whips are mentioned, have always thought of Indiana Jones or Zorro. Saddly about every time whips are brought up around the average person...their 1st thoughts usually drift towards S&M. I don't think anyone from this site is here for any other reason then the favtbis thay when they think of whips...they think of Indiana Jones.

Pagey!
I cannot help but reply to this thread fo yours! You know I dig your work but the way you come of in this thread is kinda harsh dude. Maby not your intention at all but it does come of alittle blunt.
So here's what I am thinking. I cannot blame the general public for asking you to make whips as we all know you are
VERY back and forth within this hobby! People may get confused and ecspeially people that aren't that much online.
So, that being said, I do not know when you saw ''Jango'' for the first time and as you put it, ''it was the reason you destroyed your whips and now in denial of being involved with them at all'' But the film came out in 2012 and since then you started a question thread about how your sold whips have held up in ''April 23 2013''. here:
http://indygear.com/cow/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=59535" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; This confuses me....
And... the
Whipcracking film made about a fictional character named ''Indiana Jones'' came out in 1981 whilst the Horrific Tragic history of slavery, which we all learned about in school happend way WAY before this film released. So why exactly being in this hobby at all? But that's just me......

Indy and Short Round in TOD have been whipped too... And I assume you have seen it few times in your life. You behaved like you didn't know that whips are weapons too.
Destroying whips? Jeez....

This post will offend some, I suspect....
Whiskeyman.....This is a bit silly...
Whips have been shown as brutal, nasty and vicious weapons in many films and TV shows before Indy, and since Indy too....Roots? Ever bother watching that? There's a plethora of movies that show whips as being the weapon of choice..
And they were, indeed.....But that has nothing to do with the whip itself, and everything to do with the fools holding them, and the laws backing them up in their foolery....Throwing your tantrum here doesn't do anything, except show what kind of a person you are....It's a little over the top...You must agree with that?
It's called a "hissy fit" in the UK...Usually done by young children in supermarkets with their parents when they can't get a sweet or toy that they want....No one would have ANY issue with you just saying "I'm calling it quits"....
The way you did this? Is attention grabbing, overblown, and self focused....You don't need to act like that on a forum like this...We're all adults.
If you don't dig whips anymore? Cool...Leave them alone...
But don't come here and throw out two (great) recent slave movies as the "reason" for doing so, because it simply highlights your limited viewpoint, and lack of REAL care on the subject...
No need to act that way.

Come on Whisky, just take a break from whips--don't retire from them.
Everyone else has posted VALID points, and it's like the old saying, "Guns don't kill people..."
We could make a whole list here based on that reasoning.
--none of us would be able to access COW because others have used the Internet to bully people into suicide.
--I can't keep my milk fresh because I don't have a fridge. The horrific use of one in an Indy film ruined it for me.
--Don't use a car anymore because of Death Race 2000
--Can't wear shoes because of From Russia With Love
--I don't dare go anywhere near the deli section of the supermarket now--Lady Ga Ga's meat dress killed it for me.
I'm pretty sure nobody has used your whips as weapons or torture devices--nor ever will.

You have to ask yourself, is a knife, gun, pitch fork, chain saw, screwdriver, letter opener inherently evil...?
I'd have to say a resounding...
"NO"
Objects are not inherently evil. They have no soul or reasoning process by which to choose free will, or to know, understand or discern right from wrong. But if a guy picks one of these instruments with the purpose and intent to cause harm, then his motives make this an evil act.
With a screwdriver, you could become the best electrician and wire someone's home, or you can use it to put someone's eye out. The point is, its a tool, made of metal and plastic used to better someone's quality of life, but it can also be used for the wrong reasons.
If you want to get the best bang for your buck, energies, etc., campaign to help influence or shape human nature.
Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks, and purposes to do good or evil.

This.
It removes the emotion out of the discussion (which, let's face it, is typically the challenge with these types of issues) and reduces it to empirical facts.
That said, we should respect the fact that bullwhips now spontaneously remind Pagey of one of the hundreds of particularly dark chapters of human history.

My Feelings are simply this. If the guy wants to quite making whips that's fine. Plenty of great whips being produced by other makers. But please spare me the whips are bad sermon. He could have simply said I'm not making whips anymore and let it go at that. I'm not interested in his motivation.

And there are lots of very dark chapters in our history. But in calling a spade a spade, my goal was to point directly at the source instead of the end point. With my hands, I can purpose to good or evil, it just depends on the motive behind it. Yet if I remove all things from my life that were created to improve my life, then I would soon be living in a stone cave, with no running water, because others use pipe to channel the water. Metal pipe can be used as a weapon...at least if I'm living in a cave....oh, wait, a guy could push someone against the wall of the cave and the sharp rock could cut a gash in the person's head. There is no end to this type of approach. Pretty soon, I can't live in a cave anymore, I'll just stick my head in the sand like an ostrich....wait, if I do that I could suffocate from the loose dirt. The real issue is not the blunt instrument, that many times was created as a tool, but what comes from inside the man, his own decisions to pursue a certain course of action. Get busy influencing a young person's behavior, as coaches, teachers, clergy and the like have attempted to do for decades, and I'm convinced you have become part of the solution instead of the problem. Helping to channel a person's energies in a positive direction forward, is the key to having fewer young men locking themselves inside a bedroom all weekend, and then acting out in reality, what they have just been consumed with.
Maybe these relics are left behind to remind us of the darker side of human nature? Sometimes, maybe we need to have reminders of just how destructive a force we can be, when we purpose to do so? Conversely, there are plenty of structures and institutions of man to remind one of how human nature can be turned into a positive force, and how much he can accomplish "IF" properly motivated?
Once again, perspective, POV makes all the difference. Too many times, people look at the end result, something bad, and say, 'ewww' that's sin, and they run from it, instead of purposing to engage and get actively involved.
When good people 'check out' in the wake of this, THAT is the real tragedy!

New York City, 2/5/14.
Man attacked by unidentified whips on NY.
An unidentified elderly man reported to police that he was attacked by six whips as he was waiting for bus. He is quoted as saying, "they just came out of this alley and three of them wrapped themselves around me so I couldn't move while the other three beat me." He doesn't believe he would be able to identify any of the whips. "It just happen so fast." Police say he was treated for minor injury's at Lash Larue Medical Center and released.
