Ok guys! In the movies of Indy, his MkVII bag is more like a tan. How come you guys have olive green? Or do I just have this confused and the tan IS the olive green? Help?

Original Mk VII gas mask bags were made by a number of different manufacturers over a fairly long period of time. They were a utilitarian piece of wartime equipment and there was no need, desire or ability to make them all the same color, or even all the same thickness of material. There were also variations in the pockets, and the length of the string tie-down loop. Some were lighter khaki color and others were dark olive green depending on the manufacturer and the time frame.

The bag used in Raiders (or at least one of them) was a stamped Waring & Gilbow bag from 1942 and was on the lighter khaki end of the color spectrum. But even W&G bags varied in color.

Currently when you order a vintage bag, although you can ask for a specific maker and a lighter color and some sellers (specifically What Price Glory) will try to meet that request, you generally get what you get.

I am going to ask for a Khaki bag from what price what glory. And it would be W&G because I want it as accurate as possible. And there is no dancing girl here. This is off limits to such. Lol

Do the sellers usually give you what you ask for? I am wanting one from What Price What Glory.

The WPG site says he will pick out a lighter colored bag as long as he can do so fairly easily.

Dates,

I had the same perception of the bag before researching it.

True khaki Mk VII's do exist, although not the majority of them. Give the movie(s) or the internet another look before you place your order. In many scenes, you'll see the green hue, lighting dependent. Compare the bag to the pants and/or shirt, and you'll see the slight difference.

In my opinion, washed out green is still more SA than khaki. :TOH:

You see, I am looking for an accurate bag. Raiders so to speak.

Do so fairly easily?

You can see the difference here. Both bags ordered from WPG at the same time. I had not known about the difference in color at the time but got lucky with getting the tan one.

At any given time WPG has 100s of these bags in stock. It's not an efficient use of their staff time to dig through the pile looking for just the right one back for any one customer. If there's a lighter shade bag near the top of the pile, they'll grab it for you. If not, it's whatever is on hand.

Personally, I've always preferred the greener shade bags.

So in those pics, are they sort of a khaki olive green then?

Exactly.

Keep in mind that dust, distressing, and lighting all affect the way the color is perceived scene to scene.

For example, when viewed in bright daylight, my W&G looks just like the one in Jeff's screen grabs. Indoors, it looks very green.

Well, you could ask yourself this: Will I be costuming indoors, outdoors, or both?

If you're mostly indoors, get a lighter shade for an instant sun-faded look. Sunny outdoors? Maybe a 'darker' (it's not usually that dark anyway) green. If it ends up being too green for your taste, you can always fade it yourself through washing, etc. Search the forums for more on the 'how to'.

Too many variables? Do like lots of us sickos and eventually end up with more than one. :H:

Regardless of what you choose, make sure you inspect all stitching and seams, and reasonably stress test the bag at all connection points. These bags are relics, and dry rot is fairly common.

Just my two cents....
My old MK VI was khaki, but my real MK VII is a very faded OD--that looks khaki.
Side-by-side, you can tell the difference.
Seen separately--you'd think the VII was really khaki.
