Hey all i hope this is in the right section. I dont collect Zippos but I have a bunch. Good ole USA product. I just picked up a nice 1941 replica. I saw they had a 1936 replica but wasnt sure what to look for.

If Indy carried a Zippo, what do you guys think it would be? I imagine since they started producing them in 1933 it would be something along those lines. I already have the Elsa Zippo but im looking for a classic 1930s zippo replica to add to my "not a collection" collection. . Any ideas? Ugh not another thing to collect.

Everyone around these parts go for the Elsa model. Hmm, that would sound really weird out of context.

As for what Zippo Indy would have carried, I think any one produced in the early 30's would be a candidate.

To take it in a slightly different direction, he may have carried a European style/brand lighter from his days serving during his youth.

Yes, there's always something else to collect. Especially in the expanded universe of of 'What real world items would Indy have had/carried?'.

And, to be fair, would Indy carry a zippo at all? He didn't smoke. And as far as field applications, a small box of matches would be lighter, less messy and almost a guarantee light, whereas a zippo would run out of fuel fairly fast.

True, but a lighter is a lighter, and they all can burn any form of fluid such as napha. Just because you carry a fire source like a lighter doesn't mean you necessarily smoke.

I remember working at a print shop 40 years ago where the old pressmen regularily used the cleaning napha for their offset printing presses to refill their zippos. You can/could find napha just about anywhere world wide.

This! I figure as an adventurer a lighter is a handy thing to have especially after the matches get wet. Ive had zippps go completely underwater and light immediately after. Ive also had zippos not light after going under water. So dry it out, refill it and your good to go.

I want to get a 1930s replica to go with some cool hats and suits I have from the era. Hey, I may be a redneck but I can be classy too. (Part time)

I've been pursuing the lighter question from the viewpoint "He couldn't have had that Zippo, so what did he carry?"

As a result, I now have a small collection of Dunhill, Parker/Dunhill, and a Swiss Thorens lighter, most of which are in the right era for Indy to have owned.

I have a Dunhill pipe lighter, which is very handy, as well as a Parker beacon with the double lift-arm for access to the flame. That one is handy at times, as well.

The advantage of the solid bodied lighters is that they do not go dry nearly as fast as the mostly open Zippo design.

Why not? Zippo production came out in 1933, so he'd would have been 'period correct'.

But not the lighter shown. That's the post-1947 model, just based on appearances.

I have a 1933 Zippo replica, but there's no way that sharp-edged beast will go in my pocket.

Ah, I thought you were referring to a zippo in general. You're absolutely right. I also have one from the '33 issue and they're definitely a different shaped lighter.

Agreed, you don't have to smoke to have a lighter. It comes in handy for many things. Just to me matches seem more of a logical choice for Indy. Case in point TOD - Indy had Matches to light his make shift torch and he was 3/4 of the time no where near civilization in case he needed to refill a lighter.
