There's nothing like an original.
Keep her supple, Montana!

Ha! You've hit on something there - it's actually a very stiff hoslter, almost box-like. I'm not sure if it's the age or if it's meant to be like that. I've given it a light coating of pecards, but I'm handling it carefully. Though it's not delicate in the least, it will be for display only. The colour is a dark wax-like lacquer that seems to have been applied after it was assembled (I can see that natural colour underneath the belt-loop). It's very, very dark which is unusual since all the other British Webley holsters I've seen are more of a russet colour. I don't think British Naval officers ever wore a Sam-Browne pistol rig, so I've been wondering if its possibly a police issue holster. The seller did have other British police holsters in the same colour.

Nice find. That holster is in very good shape for its age!
The leather used to make holsters is usually fairly stiff. It helps the holster keep its shape and allows for easier draw of the weapon.
As long as the leather doesn't feel like it's going to crack when it's flexed, you should be all right.
