Does anyone know of a quality hatter in Houston, TX that takes good measurements both for circumference and head shape, long oval, etc? There has to be a good one here somewhere in Texas.

I don't know of a "hatter" pers say. But Miller hats is based in Houston. and they will take measurements, etc. They have decent customer service.
Other than that, I'd drive up to Peter Bros. in DFW

I'm sorry to say custom hatters in every city or even every state is the thing of the past. On line is the way it is now. There are ways to have a hat fitted. I take measurements from customers all over the world. Once I get a average from the customer based off a video that I provide. I send out crowns to double check the measurements. I also send out a conformitor to check size and shape. I have a high percentage of fitting customers. If you can read a tape measure and follow instructions, it's pretty easy to work.

I gotta think there's western hat shops in
Houston. Yep, a quick Google search gave me these options.
http://www.yellowpages.com/houston-tx/hat-shops" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
These two look promising.
http://www.thehatstore.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://www.millerhats.com/index.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (as already mentioned)
Ironically, most of the other shops listed did not have link to websites so you'd actually have to either search their name directly or call them.
Also, as mentioned, it would be worth the drive to see the folks at Peter Bros.

Indiana Jeff

Yeah, honestly... I'd either have Penman do it with his system or drive to Peter Bros hats in DFW.
The other stores mentioned might just throw a tape measure over your head and be done with it.

Dont look for a hatter, look for the bending oakster. He is a fireman.

You being in Texas, I'd definitely recommend either a trip and/or a phone call to another Texan...Joe Peters in Fort Worth. His family has been professional hatters since 1917, and their shop is amazing to visit if you can make the drive. Keep it 'local'.
Scott, I'm surprised you're not trying to support Texas craftsmen.

I've been to Miller and was not impressed. Nice customer service but lacking in personal detail. The Hat Store is the next stop but I thought I'd see if anyone here knew of a good person to see. I plan on sending the "Bending Oakster" all of my info for a Raiders hat soon, we've exchanged a few emails already. However, being that this will be my first truly custom fedora I want to have all of my details lined up ahead of time. More for my own benefit that anything else.
I need to schedule a meeting or conference to attend in Ft. Worth. If I do I'll probably end up with a new straw Indy from Peter's Bros.!
Thanks,
James

Agreed 100%. Joe Peters is a local to RaiderKid, a fan (the VERY first to create a custom Indy fedora for us, even before Optimo), and an original member and supporting vendor of COW since 2002. The very first organized Texas Indygear summit took place right at his shop the summer between the first and second QM summit.
I'm amazed at how little support he's received in the past few years from our community. He also uses Winchester felt, and is more than competitive in pricing, even better than most when it comes to the higher end felts, and has been one of 'us' for 11 years.

Wearing mine today, as a matter of fact!

The Indy milan straw is great. I'd recommend the natural color instead of brown. You're not going for 'accuracy' anyway with straw, and the lighter color is better for hot weather, imo. I have both colors, and I reach for the lighter one almost always.

I'll third the Indy straw. I also have one in natural and it is my go to summer hat. I'm trying to hold out to June 1st to retire the felts for the season, but I don't know if I can hold out 2 more days.
(sweating and panting).

I've always wanted one of their straws. This just might be the year for it...
