Flying with bullwhips in the US?

Has anyone here flown in the US with a bullwhip in a carry on bag? I've got an upcoming trip and plan to travel light, without checked baggage, but would like to bring a bullwhip along.

Unfortunately, I'll be flying from Orlando to Boston, and the TSA I've dealt with in those two airports have been about the worst of any I've dealt with so far. If no one has had trouble, I figure I'll give it a go, but if people are getting routinely hassled elsewhere, I'm bound to get it even worse at MCO or BOS.

If you go to this page on the TSA website:
http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information ... ited-items

...and you enter in the term "Bullwhip" in the search option, you get this result:

Search Results For:

Check Only

Martial arts and self defense weapons are prohibited from carry-on baggage. Some of these items may be transported in your checked baggage.

You should check State and local laws concerning carriage of or shipping of martial arts weapons. Transportation Security Officers will notify a law enforcement officer if the item is believed to be illegal.

Any sharp objects in checked baggage should be properly sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent injury to baggage handlers and security officers.

Even if an item is generally permitted, it may be subject to additional screening or not allowed through the checkpoint if it triggers an alarm during the screening process, appears to have been tampered with, or poses other security concerns. The final decision rests with TSA on whether to allow any items on the plane.
So nope, not an option for carry-on.

:TOH: Best wishes,
Nebraska S.

I fly out of Logan all the time, but have always checked my whips, just in case. I really don't want t take the risk.

On the bright side, when they confiscate stuff, I know where TSA has their "Confiscated Stuff Store!"
(There was an article in the Globe about it recently.)

Techically, the bulwhip used to be classified as an argricultural tool, and it wasn't specifically prohibitied.
Most stuff TSA restricts are mostly judgement calls for alot of things now days.
(Except the really obvious stuff... so don't say it...)

And FYI, let me know when you're going tp be in Boston, I'm always up for making a fellow gear head by rounds at one of our local, historical establishments!

Thanks for the invite, Dalexs. Unfortunately, this is not a pleasure trip, but my time will be spent with my mom during her cancer surgery and treatment. Things are expected to go well, but I figure they might go even better if I'm standing by her hospital bed with a bullwhip. ;)

In all seriousness, bullwhip practice is kind of like meditation to me, and I figure I might need that to ease the mind now and then while I'm up there.
