Sizing help.

Post by dresden »

Ok here's the deal. I wear a size 36 jacket, the measurements for my best fitting jacket are
Full shoulder 18"
Chest across 20"
Bottom across 18"
Back length 25"
Sleeve length 24.5 to 25"

I'm thinking about buying a jacket second hand from a guy here, it's a size 38
His measurements are
Full shoulder 19"
Chest across 22"
Bottom across 19.5"
Back length 25"
Sleeve 24.5"
Now I know this is a 38 and IS bigger than what I normally wear, so I KNOW it will be big on me.
My question is will it be TOO big on me? Can you guys give me some advice?
I'm about 5'10 and about a buck forty, so I'm a tall skinny guy ;)
I normally wouldn't buy a jacket a size larger than mine, but this jacket is SWEET. Thanks guys!

Having been a 36 until I was in my mid 30s I can tell you that unless you are in your 40s, even if it doesn't fit right now, it will a few years from now, and it would probably work now with a sweater.

If you like it, think its a good deal and can afford it, buy it.

I have a lot of regrets over buying jackets that were a perfect fit, rather than just a bit loose when I was younger.

How tight/loose is the 'best fitting' jacket you currently own? If it is already on the roomy side, 22" will be swimming on you.

I'm 5'10", 175# and my tightest fitting jackets are 21-22" across with 19" shoulders. They aren't so tight I can't breath/move, but they look tailored/fitted. I have a Wested that measures 24" and a USW Legend that measures 23". Both I say are comfortably roomy without looking like I'm wearing my Dad's jacket.

RR58 brings up a good point in terms of 'later life spread' :[ and jackets that fit just right now, may be too tight in a few years. For me I've spent the past couple years changing my eating and exercise so have been moving in the other direction. \:D/ That being the case, personally I've been gravitating toward more fitted jackets over the past couple years so if I had a jacket that I really liked the fit at 20" I would pass on a 22" because it would feel too big.

My best fitting jacket right now, is alittle loose when i wear just a shirt, when I wear a sweater underneath its a bit tight but comfortable. I'm 28 now so hopefully ill put on some weight in a few years, but I'm the kinda person who can eat all I want when I want and never gain a pound so.
This jacket I'm interested is a magnoli LC jacket that's featured on his website , I've wanted a magnoli for awhile now, and when I went to his website a few years ago I absolutely feel in love with the jacket I saw in the pic, so now I have the opportunity to get my hands on THAT very jacket. I just wanna make sure that its not like you said " my dads jacket "
