I wish David Morgan had made the original Indy whips like this.
16 plait, with the a herringbone handle and just to top it all off a pineapple heel knot.
Replicating such a whip would not only be more of a challenge, successfully completing the project would grant more personal satisfaction.
Congrats' on your new whip.
Awesome job Joe

I think (at least this is what I've gleaned from reading his books over and over) David Morgan's goal when he set out to make whips, was to find a nice balance between form and function whilst still turning a small profit. His whips were far more refined and advanced in design than the average cow or horse hide bullwhip traditionally available in the US, yet sturdy enough to be able to survive the rigors of stage and film work, and in this I believe he succeeded. In fact, he has been so successful at it that he essentially launched a bullwhip revival in the second half of the 20th century, with some small help from a certain movie franchise...
Twelve plaits are faster to make, yet offer almost the same action as a sixteen plait whip when broken in, as for the Turk's head knot found on the first three Indy whips, likewise it offers a good grip whilst still being attractive, in a more rustic sort of way. Yes a pineapple knot is more sturdy by virtue of it's design, not to mention pretty, but it also takes longer to weave, and it is so hard to turn a profit making whips because everything is hand made, ergo it all takes a lot of time and time is money... that you really can't begrudge anyone not doing elaborate work on the normal range of whips. Personally, I have a soft spot in my heart for the rugged good looks of the Morgan whip, it will forever stand in my mind as the quintessential American style bullwhip, that captures the essence of the west but with the refinements of the Australian heritage of whipmaking skills.
That said, there is no denying Joe Strain is one of the world's foremost whipmakers and we are all very fortunate he has kept his prices as affordable as they are, given his talent and craftsmanship! Anyone with a Strain whip in his possession is indeed a rich man (or woman)!
Cheers!

Well said Franco! The Morgan style of whip definitely has its place in my heart also! If I were forced to make one style if whip forever, it would have to be that.
I don't remember if I already commented or not, but congrats on the whip! It's very nice

Beautiful whip.
I have two joe strain whips and love them.
I tried to sell them last year. I don't know what I was thinking!

I concur with Jeremy. You couldn't have explained it better, Franco.
That whip is gorgeous, no doubt. But as Franco put it, for me, it's like having a tough Jeep from WWII (Morgan), and Joe's whip is more like a Jeep Wrangler... who knows? Did I make my point?
The best part, is you have many whipmakers to choose from, who can cater with each and every need, be it aesthetical, functional, etc.
Congratulations on the whip Indydawg!
Aldo.

Well given the choice I'd go with the Wrangler....
I was not putting down Joe's work, how could I? It's perfect! I was merely explaining the reasons for a 12 plait vs a 16 and a TH vs a pineapple knot.

I have a question, and yes that is a beaut of a whip. I to have a Strain 8' which I'm just getting into.
Here's my question, on his site for purchasing falls, they have two types.
Heavy and Light.
What's the difference. and does it matter which one I go for.
I find my self in the near future needing another fall and some poppers to.
Thanks, Croft

If you have an Australian style bullwhip or stockwhip, you probably need a lighter fall. American style ( joes are called lone star ) or Indy style bullwhips probably need a heavy fall. Still it'll probably be best to ask joe himself. He'll know for sure seeing as he made the whip.

Yup, he confirmed that as I have a Indy whip, the heavy fall is what I'll be ordering.
