Son of a Gun!!

Post by Gater »

I have seen Raiders 437 times since 1981 in total. In all that time, I ALWAYS thought that the revolver exclusively had a half-moon sight, as seen as Indy tosses it into his luggage at the beginning.

Only now, thanks to the miracle of DVD's, do I see that in both the Cairo chase scene and the Flying Wing scenes is it a ramp sight!!!!

ok, most of you knew this, but as a Canadian, I rarely concern myself with the firearms aspect of our hatted hero. This is a WHOLE new discovery for me, and makes it a bit easier to replicate the revolver now (see Dollar Store Revolver).

Just had to pass on my little 'learn something new every day' moment.

Adendum -

I have just read the FAQ section f the Main Page, and found the Bapty/Stembridge section. VERY informative stuff. I LOVE that site!!

The half moon sight is what came on the military service revolvers.

I am curious as to when and why S&W put ramped sights on their guns.

Pyro, S&W began installing the Baughman ramp front sights on their revolvers in 1936. The purpose was to give a better sight presentation, and to aid in drawing from a holster (some will disagree with this, as they say the half-moon is slicker out of the holster). According to S&W records, there were a couple of custom ramp front sight installations for customers in 1935.

Of course, the REAL trick to being successful in surviving a gunfight is to have the gun in your hand BEFORE it starts, right Ron? The front sight THEN figures into the equation... (grins) Regards. Michaelson
