Adventurebilt Measurement Discrepancy

You know I've had my Steve Delk AB Raiders since Oct. 2008 and loved it and plenty of compliments as well when I wear it out but I just noticed today from watching the BluRay Raiders that my hat seems different dimensionally from Ford's hat in Cairo and just after in the bar. I couldn't place it at first so I took some short movies with my hat on to see what it was and you know the crown doesn't seem tall enough. I was like "wow" so I checked the measurements from Indy Gear's Raider's specs and the crown is supposed to be 5 1/2 " tall mine's not quite 5" (maybe a hair shy of 5")!!! I have the same 58 euro size as Ford although I'm not as tall (I'm 5'7") but Steve didn't know my frame size so what gives ?? Anybody run into this problem ?? Outside of this the hat is beautiful and looks the part.

Hello. The 5 1/2 inches mentioned is the uncreased height. If you push out the creases it should measure 5 1/2".

You think ?? I dunno, even then still looks slightly lower than Ford's hat. I thought maybe I could raise the crown and then recrease but not enough material, I still think it's off. What does everybody else think ?? Is it in my head ??

What is the measurement of the front crease? Measuring from the brim break at the bottom of the ribbon measuring up that front crease until you reach the top?

4 1/2"

I would say that's spot on. It may not look good on you but the specs are correct. Can you spot a pic of you wearing it?

The hat looks great don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with it. It just seems a little off but it could just be me. If you say it's correct then it's correct. Thanks

One thing I have learned by becoming a hat addict is that photos, video, in -person sight, and measurements never tell the same tale when it comes to size. It's like talking to 5 witnesses to the same accident - every story is different. The shape of Ford's face, the lighting, the exact shape of the brim, and many other things can alter how the hat looks compared to yours. I've also noticed that the Cairo hat looks taller than even other hats in the movie. But I also see that the brim break is... hmm, would "soft" be a good descriptor, John? It's not crisp and sharp anymore, but just flares out from the crown, so that may add to the illusion.

CJ, I would have to agree.

Personally, I was surprised when I first read that the Raiders open crown was 5 1/2 inches high.
I've still not seen any of the films (I will one day, I promise) but from the various snippets and stills that I have seen, it always looked higher. I think the block shape helps create the illusion that it is a really tall crown, I would have bet money on it being about 6 inches (good job I didn't, eh!)

It looks taller then what it is. The block shape and transition point play a big roll. Look at you casablanca hat I made you for example. The open crown is much taller then the Raiders open crown but they crease to about the same height. The Raisers look taller then the Casablanca. Crease plays a bug part as well. When someone ask me what the open crown is of any hat I have made, I tell them what does it matter? open crown by itself does tell me very much.

That's for sure. That deep diamond takes up a fair bit of the crown height

There's no diamond, it's a crease. Still not enough material to raise it if I want to. I'm happy with it, like to get with John and order a SOC.

I understand that it's a center dent. Was using the Casablanca hat to make a point. I would like to see a pic to give you my opinion of what might be wrong.

Again, I love the hat it's an excellent piece of craftsmanship I just feel it's not quite tall enough or boxy enough from the front. Take a look here

can you tell me what the crown height is from the front? measured where the brim break is up the front tight crease to the top?
also tell me what the brim specs are front and side?

Just from looking at your pics it looks to me that you have your hat sitting too far down in the back and too high in the front. I would straighten the front brim so it isnt pulled down so far and then pull it down more in the front.
Of course listen to whatever John has to say over me but it looks correct IMO.

I agree with what you see but I want to get the specs aswell.

Crown height from the front is 4 1/2" front and rear brims are 2 3/4" and the sides are 2 1/2"

That sounds spot on for what I see. If we could see it with the hat being straight on without being tilt back. That would help greatly.

OK, after looking at all these photo's and looking at the specs. I think the brim specs he used for you is correct and the view from the front when the hat being worn straight on makes the crown height look spot on. From the profile it looks off to me. It could be thrown off a bit (when you get to close of a shot for the camera). I not sure. I think its one of these cases when the persons head doesn't match up with their size. It doesn't happen often but it does happen.
Could I bother you for a shot of you front and profile without your hat?

I think it would be helpful if the pictures weren't cropped so closely. When parts of your face are cut off by the frame, it makes it a bit harder to judge the hat's proportions on you. In any event, I would also suggest that the difference in the shape of yours and Ford's face can also contribute to a perceived visual difference.

Looks like it is just your facial shape that is throwing you off.

Here's even more
http://s1354.beta.photobucket.com/user/ ... ora%20pics" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. I can't get too far away from the camera or you can't make out the details of the hat also I don't have anyone to take pics for me so I have to use a timer and run back and forth to take pics.

Thank you Erik, the comparison you made from Ford to me makes my point there's a difference in the hat albeit subtle. It seems my hat has a slight taper and is not as boxy has Ford's fedora. Now if there was a way we could do the same thing with a picture of Ford in comparison to me in the SOC scenes you will see it there as well.

after the the last couple of shots I would have to say the same. The reason your hat isn't as boxy is your hat isn't turned.

and since you have had this hat for just over 4 years it might even be due for a reblock maybe? Then you could give it a turn to be more SA.
Or you could just leave it. I think it looks great.

Thanks guys for the info. I've taken into account facial shape and all but basically the discrepancy is when I compare this to SOC. I've been looking at other members hats here on the COW and elsewhere and and I feel the crown seems not tall enough and not square enough from the front. I love the hat though.

Maybe you should get John to make you a SOC hat with a 6 inch crown or 6.5 crown and let him crease it for you. I bet that would scratch your itch.
Doesn't hurt to call him or e-mail him and ask. Nice guy
Cheers
E.

I was considering getting John to make me a SOC but I'd like to hear his special announcement first. I really appreciate all the help and info from everyone.

If the hat was turned you would have a much more boxy hat. That's why I always suggest to people to have it turned/creased off center. It really makes the hat much more screen accurate. The other thing is the brim would appear just a tad shorter by turning it, it will pick up the brim in the front so you could wear it more straight on and with the brim looking a tad shorter would make the hat appear taller.

Not sure. It's a year in a half in the making. Don't won't to rush the end process. Or give a misleading date.
