Does the leather strap have grooves?

Bags, Boots, Shirts and all other gear should be discussed here.

Does the leather strap have grooves?

Post by wwhisko »

I just bought the Indy Blu-ray set, and I'm now able to see details that never really showed up, before. I cannot seem to find a single shot of the strap, which shows any kind of grooves. It appears to be just a plain brown strap. Ever since I can remember, I've always thought there were grooves, though I don't quite know why. Can anyone please help me with this? Is there a particular scene that can be pointed out to me, where the grooves are visible?

this is something many of us noticed when we watched Raider's in IMAX. We did not see any grooves either.

Thank you, sir. That really helps me, a lot. It seems to be evident on the Blu-ray, that they're non-existent. If the grooves really are there, then an IMAX image would definitely show them. Do you know why everyone assumed there were grooves, to begin with? It would be interesting to find out how such a rumor began.

That I cannot answer. It could even be that ONE scene had grooves but HF wore a different strap at that time, I do not know.

I do know that if you glance through these threads, many people say the same thing, that they did not see grooves.

I do know that I used to own an original Noel Howard Leather raiders strap and it did not have grooves either.

With the strap, you are looking at a high contrast situation -- dark strap against a light shirt. Edge enhancement (very common on DVD) *may* give the illusion of grooves on the strap by creating a slight "ghost" of the blend between the light and dark area of the image.

Plus, some of the potential source straps (like rifle slings) have grooves (technically "creases"), which may have added to the confusion.

That's true. If Indy was real and sitting around in 1930's and wanted a leather strap for his satchel(that had yet to exist for another decade) he probably would've bought a leather strap designed for a rifle.

Although we're talking about a guy that has custom pants, shirts, and jackets made for him on a regular basis....so he might've had a custom strap made....hahaha
