Hatsizes,are they "true to size"..

Let me explain myself,on Friday I tried on Bugatti made felt-hats sizes 60-58 and my head measures 60cm and the 60 was loose on me! 59cm was better and 58cm was er.."snuggish" but still, my main point is the size-"variety".There are many manufactures of our beloved Fedora and how does one know and determine the right size..? To add this more confusion I had just new haircut.. :-k ](*,)

Yes, therein lies the rub. Not all that surprising to read that a 60cm hat didn't fit even if your head measures 60cm. I'm not familiar with the brand you mentioned, but from what I've read about factory made hats, sizing will rarely be exact. In any manufacturing processes there are going to be tolerances +/- some variation. In most cases, (like in a jacket) a few millimeters in variation wouldn't even been noticed. In hats, however, millimeters matter a great deal.

Same applies to haircuts. Hair takes up a surprising amount of volume inside a hat so pre- or post-haircut can make a difference with how hats fit. I know I'm overdue for a haircut when my hats start to fit too snug.

Indiana Jeff

Size variation in factory made hats is VERY common. I wear a 60, as well, but I have everything from 59 to 61 on my collection. The first thing to do is try to look at a size chart from the manufacturer of the hat to see where you head measurement in inches lines up with the cm size. Second, when in doubt, go with you usual, correct size from vendors that cover return shipping for exchanges. Third, remember that a little big is better than a little snug.

Yikes :-k ! I am not even going to go here -- where 'head sizes have never been before.' Sorry, couldn't resist, that line! I have found that even sometimes-custom-made hats, there can be varianiences in the fit and this, in my case is not due to hair length, as I always wear mine really short. Factory hats are the most common for vast differences, but every once in a while, even a custom-made will have it's issues too! W>

Most common reason for this is that companies get lazy and don't do the math when doing their hat size chart. the 2nd. reason is that some use hat sizes and some use hat block sizes. Then there is the 3rd. reason and thats mostly due to factory hats don't ever correct small differences in the making of a hat. example. you can block one felt body on a hat block and then block a 2nd body on that same block. they may not be the exact same hole to put the sweatband in. This happen because not every felt body reacts exactly the same. You must make small adjustments for this. so if you cut both sweatbands the same they will fit slightly different. There are a few other reasons but I could fill up this thread with it and most likely bore you guys and dolls to death.

Best advise when buying a hat is to have someone else measure you. Then contact the company and have them size you. Do this every single time buying a hat. People hair cut changes, weight gain or lose will effect fit.

It isn't that hard. There is a lot of miss information being posted and makes things a little difficult. Like I stated earlier. The best thing to do is not over think things. Have someone take your measurements a few times. The number should pop out at you after doing that. Then provide that measurement to the hat maker or hat retailing and let them size you. People make big mistakes by over thinking of trying to fit themselves by going by a hat size.

It helps a lot but then you have to consider the fact if a customer has a hard time operating a tape measure, are they really going to handle something with about 30 moving parts? I try my best to put up videos showing how to have someone to take their measurements and using the conformer? But some still have a hard time. I have a feeling I will working on that for the rest of my life. I send out paper crowns to double check measurements and that helps a bit. I have people follow my vids. Give me a measurement and when I send out the tap and conformer. None of them match. Doesn't happen a lot but it happens.
