Duct tape bullwhip

Hi, I've recenty saw this topic at Indylounge: http://indylounge.proboards.com/index.c ... 431&page=1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and I was amazed with the whip made out of duct tape. It was made just like leather one.
So I thought I would give it a try. Why not, the material is very cheap. I wanted to follow Paul Stenhouse's instructions and make a 6ft 12plt whip. I made the core, I hadn't got ay problem with that.
But they came when I started cutting strands for first belly. I wanted to cut them 9mm wide and the handle and taper them down. I have 50mm tape, so I cut out the 4ft long strip, fold it in half to have 4ft long and 25mm wide strand. I tried to stretch it a bit in my hands and it broke fairly easily. So I doubled the thickness and gained not too much strenght of the strand. Four layer strand had thickness of 0.8mm.
Maybe US tapes are stronger? I don't know how that guy could plait it with 12 strands and I'm not talking about super tight plaiting like roo whips. I can try cutting 6 layer strands, but they will be over 1mm thick. Will so thick strands be good to make 2 bellies and 2 bolsters whip?
Any ideas with duct tape plaiting guys?

If you keep the bolsters around .8 mm then having strands a bit over 1mm will be fine.

Haha! I never thought I'd see that topic alive. The first duct tape bullwhip was mine. I didn't realize somebody also made another duct tape bullwhip, and a 100 times better I might add. :notworthy:

I'll give it a try tomorrow and will let you know about the results. Even if the strenght won't increase significantly, I think I'll plait it anyway, just to see how it will turn out and secondly, I'm bored after autumn exams, which I've passed :)

Here's an update. I made 6-layer strands and plaited them around the core. I think it turned out very nicely. Sorry, no pic of it. Then I put 4-layer bolster and binded it. Tomorrow I will plait second belly and second bolster. It's fun to make a whip following 'leatherwhip' instructions.

Stay tuned.

I made some progress today. I plaited second belly and put second bolster. It's so stiff and springy. I think it will be a nice whip.

Tomorrow I will plait the overlay.

The whip is almost ready. I have to tie knots. It turned out pretty well for such bad material. Tomorrow I will post some pics.

Make a video with you cracking it as well. :whip:

That would be cool.

Sorry for delay. I did my best to tie the knots, but I managed to do only one. The buttknot drove me crazy and I gave up. Duct tape didn't want to stay tight in the needle, I had to tape it to it. It was nightmare. Another lesson learned, no more duct tape whips ;)
Anyway, here it is:

It's 12 plaited down to 4, as I was afraid to have 6 narrow strands. I think the plaiting looks good.

And the video, pretty well for such **** whip I think:

Thanks guys. I think it's nice looking whip overall. And it cracks finely.
I can point few things I would change if I'd decided for making another one. But I won't. Too much stress and nerves, and believe me, I'm very calm person ;)
