PETER or Anyone, Help with sizing my 1st Wested Jacket!

by Indiana Jackson
I'm ordering my 1st Wested Jacket tonight and wanted to give everyone my specs to see how they sounded. I want a close to authentic jacket.

*Temple of Doom
*Pre-Distressed Brown Cowhide ( I want the durability) [How good does Pre-Dist. Look?]
*Anodized Black Slides
*Nickel zipper on right side
*Pressed Studs on Pockets
* 2 zippered non-outlined inside pockets
*Gussets under arms
*Action pleats with Elastic
*Storm Flap
*ID Name Tag on inside of jacket
*Satin Lining

:?: ??? Anything I'm missing or forgetting to specify???

The hardest thing I'm having a problem with is the sizing. It is quite vague to me, even after reading all the posts on this forum. Here is what I've measured so far.

1. Are these enough measurements?
2. Do these measurements make sense together or am I way off?
3. Any better recommendations on how to measure more accurately?
4. Should I have measured exactly and let Wested compensate for looseness or added in the extra room myself? (i.e. Chest size with 3 fingers in between)

Here they are:

*Neck: 18.75" with 1 finger in between -(taken from Body)
*Height (barefoot to top of crown): 70" -(taken from Body)
*Chest: 45" with 3 fingers in between -(taken from Body)
*Shoulder seam to 1st knuckle on thumb -(taken from current leather jacket): 24"
*Base of Neck(collar) to waistline: 23" -(taken from Body) (Do I need to specify requested jacket length Here?)
*Shoulder (from collar seam to shoulder seam) -(taken from current leather jacket): 7"
*ArmPit to Waistline: 14" -(taken from Body)

:D :!:  Need Advice ASAP!!!

Thanks in Advance

Wested claims the measurements they ask for on their site are enough, I would recommend sending your armpit to waist length as well as your waist measurement.

The one thing I've noticed is that we are making the measurment process harder than it has to be. I do believe if you follow the directions as provided on the Wested site you should not have a problem, And if by an outside chance the Jacket comes in with a wrong size Your original measurments can speak for themselves. When we start giving Wested all these different measurments it can get confusing and a greater chance for an error can occur.

I guess the bottom line is go by Peter's instructions and you can't go wrong. Just my .02

Thanks,

Mike

Yes indeed an opinion on the PD Cow:

GREAT leather. I love mine; it's really quite soft and has that 50 mission look to it; (or in this case, 50 adventure??).

Here are the pics indoors:

Please note however, these pics are indoors under unfiltered Flourescant (sp?) lights; Also you will have to excuse the young man on the bed; that is my floor mate William goofing around; The album is one that I sent to the Rents justifying my new jacket purchase and he wanted to be in them! :D

From what I've read on the COW, I would add an inch or 2 to the length of the front of the jacket, so it doesn't feel too short. My jacket seems to be about an inch shy of where I like it to rest. I think the reason is, the jacket fit the style of the era the movie came out, windbreakers, Members Only jackets, etc. They were all waist length, where as todays style of jacket are more of a 3/4 length style. I'm going to order a Wested similar to yours after the holidays, but I'm going to talk to Wested about making it a little longer.
Just my .02c(worth about .0c in todays economy)

Farnham -
wow!

Nice jacket. Makes me wish I'd ordered my cowhide in the predistressed look (now that I'm realising how tough it is, its never gonna look like that...)

Just a thought on measurements.. after chatting w/both Peter and Gerry the common request of adding 1" to the front seems to help only for those packing something other than a 6 pack in front #-o However I also gave my weight/waist as well and they said the extra 1" can be added w/o a problem but it isn't necessary in my case (I'm a "heavywight" now i've finally filled out at a whopping 136lbs :-k ) I also gave my neck size since I can't stand having anything up tight to it (No i'm not claustrophobic). Ohh and if you live in the "great white north" like I do and plan on wearing your new Wested in the colder months then mention you'll be wearing a heavy sweater under it as well. Otherwise it was just the measurements they suggested on their site.

Shal

This is not true at all. I am 6 foot, 1 inch tall, and I weigh in
at just under 180 pounds.

I have a 42 inch chest, and a 36 inch waist, and I do not have
a huge gut at all.

But the first jacket I got from Wested, and a couple of other
vendors too, were too short in the front, and they rode up and
looked terrible. I have pictures of this that I sent to Peter and
he added the extra inch and a half to the front of my Wested
and it fits great now.

I have also added this same amount to every other jacket that
I have special ordered since, and it has worked in every case so far.

I stand up very straight ( I make my mommy proud) and the
more I stand up straight, the worse the jackets without the
extra length in the front looked.

A big gut only makes this case worse, but its not the only reason
for this to happen. Its just happens.

I agree with Flathead. I am 5'6" tall and weigh 158lbs. Relatively flat abs, but certainly not washboards (yet  ) My last Raider's jacket rode up in front quite a bit. I think it is a balance issue in my case. It makes a difference as to where I wear it on my shoulders. If you pull the jacket forward on the shoulder seams, the hem evens out, but it doesn't feel right. The last lambskin I received was better, but still does this. If I stand up very straight and take a deep breath, the front rides up a bit again. It is not nearly as noticable when it is not zipped though, which is the way I wear it most of the time, but still visible. See...

This is very true indeed. I did not notice it on my first jacket
until I zipped it up. Unzipped, it looked o.k.

Even with the extra inch to inch and half, when the jacket is
unzipped, I still think it looks better.

Also, the ride up on people without big guts might be because
of your chest.

If you stand with your chest out proud, then any piece of clothing
like a jacket or loose sweater or shirt will ride up in the front
because it has to go over your chest.

In the back, it just hangs down. But in the front, if you have
a big gut, or you have a big chest, or you stand with your chest
out, it will ride up everytime because it has more "surface area"
to go around than the back.

I've mentioned this before, but it was kind of overlooked too....the 'gut' syndrone ALSO causes the gap that occurs in the action pleat. It's not the pleat design, folks, it's the extra baggage around the middle. Regards. Michaelson

Wow. I remember that post. In reality, instead of calling Peter and asking for modifications, we should be modifying our bodies and postures. I have changed a lot physically in the last couple of years, for the better - but my older Westeds (Cow & Goat) still fit better than my last two (Lambskins). Of course, now I am all paranoid about my pleats

Hmm, I wonder if females would benefit from this 1 inch addition. I need to go look at my Westeds and see how they drape.

No offence intended to anyone btw regarding the 'gut" topic.. and the info I ahve on such is only what was discussed with wested's about it. I initially asked about it in case it was needed regardless of your build. I suspect it has to do with overall body structure as well as weight issues though O.o;
By no means am I an expert on such things however so all opinions / information is always welcomed. :)

As far as fit on a female form.. Wested's should be able to change the pattern as needed for such with ease.. afterall I doubt you're the only woman to ever want a jacket like this :-s

Perhaps the simple approach would be best.. ask Peter directly about it? :whip:

Just to add to all the speculation. I’ve heard it said it also depends on the type of lining you choose, with the cloth body lining preventing the slippage typically found with the silky satin body lining which tends to slide back and forward on the shoulders, especially if the jacket is not cut just right for that particular individual.

I would go with Cotton Body, Satin Sleeves.

That's what mine is and it's great. It hugs the body snugly and the satin sleeves mean that when you put it on, it doesn't pull the sleeves of your sweater/shirt/whatever up. Very handy, imo.

So is it basically a no lose situation to add the extra 1" or so to the front? If you add it and it ends up being unneccessary, will it look weird?
