My Temple of Doom "Gladstone" Bag

Recently found a Gladstone Bag on Ebay from Australia. It appears to be the correct model/design - but a bit smaller (in height and length) than the one on the film.

I treated the bag with a good helping of Peckard's, then I downloaded a few random vintage luggage labels and printed them out onto label stock and cut them out.

They did not stick very well (not the least of which because we had record breaking high temperatures and humidity where I live), so I got some Scotch Super 77 spray adhesive, which took a few applications. The contour of the leather makes it tough to stick anything to, but ironically - after getting beaten up from applying, coming off and re-applying a few times - they ended up with the perfect "weathered" look - all quite by accident.

I thought anyone looking to put together similar gear on would like to see the before and after photos.

Dude, I have the same style bag! I bought it online a couple of months ago. I like it lots just haven`t cleaned it out yet but a really cool vintage looking bag. Yours looks great with the stickers and Short Round looks awesome! Good find! Good shots!

WOW! :shock: Sepia tone that photo above, give it some age in photoshop, and I think you'd be hard pressed to prove it wasn't taken in the 1930's! WELL done on both photo and bag acquisition!!

HIGH regards! Michaelson :M: :tup:

Nice bag and even better Short Round! :clap:

A gladstone is still on my 'want' list. Duluth Trading has one (their AWOL bag - NES gave it a positive review) that I've been eyeing for some time. I'd like to get a vintage one, but like all things vintage they are either too worn out or too expensive. :?

Indiana Jeff

Jeff - yeah this was a bit spendy - but I decided to go for it. It was about $167 ($67 just for shipping) - I've had similar frustrations finding one locally - mostly the problem has been they have been the wrong style of bag. I have also yet to see one that is as big as the one in the film.

Just this past weekend saw this one in an antique store in San Antonio..

It was $135 and claimed to be made of Walrus skin but it was in pretty beaten shape. Salvagable but it would need alittle work.

Walrus skin? :-k :shock: I may have to call shenanigans on that. =; Not of you, Gorak, you're only reporting what was said to you.

If/when I get one of these bags I want to be able use it so there's the rub. A big enough vintage bag in usable condition is very pricey. I'm not opposed to buying a new model, but again, decent ones get expensive real quick. That's why I keep circling the Duluth bag.

Indiana Jeff

I waited a long time eyeing Fossil`s Gladestone bag untill it went on special. For a short time they knocked $100 off so I bought it and while it is a beautiful bag, it is way too big for daily use and the sides are not supported so unless it has anything in it, it just flops down into a heap of nice leather on the floor! :(

Hmm, Fossil makes one? Do you have the name/model?

Here is my Fossil Gladestone..
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h304/ ... 065906.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
but without an inside look what happens..
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h304/ ... 070218.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Its a great looking bag but for my personal tastes, it is too big and flops arounds too much when empty..
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h304/ ... 070233.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h304/ ... 065918.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But to stay on topic, here it is next to my two Gladestone bags, one of which is exactly like the one pictured at the start of this thread..
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h304/ ... 065946.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h304/ ... 070118.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I love these vintage doctor bags but I just wish I could find a modern one that I could use daily. These vintage ones are alittle to vintage to put thru daily rigors. And the Fossil one, the only modern one I have found, is just too big to lug around all day!

That's my thing, I want a larger sized bag to use as luggage not as a daily carry. To find vintage that's large and in good enough shape to use has proven cost prohibitive.

Indiana Jeff

Very impressive. I've looked for one for some time and either have the money but can't find one or find one and don't have the money. Maddening how that works.

Resuscitating this old thread rather than start a new one.
