I am just about to start the overlay for a new nylon whip and
i was practicing my knots (with leather), which i have gotten
quite good at, and can do quite a few knots now :D . Proprep....
how did you do the knots on your whip? I only have a needle that
has the screw tip and holds only leather. Its quite annoying to do
a knot with nylon when i dont have a needle! what did you do?
I find nylon much easier to work with but it still does not have the
same versitlity that leather has. And what type of knot did you do?
a 3-4 3 pass?

Molo,

If you woulld get a pair of forceps, you can reach back through the 'unders' in the knot and grasp the working end and pull it through. Then depending on how tightly you tie the knot as you are making it, you just need to use your fid and pull it down tight.

If the 3-4 3 pass knot is not covering, go to a 4b 5p 3 pass. That will cover a bit more area. Or you can tie a pineapple knot that will cover the foundation in a herringbone pattern.

One other thing that will help when tying nylon knots. Burn the end and shape it to a point before it cools. This will help also. Not as handy as a 'permlok needle tho'

Jerry,

Where can you buy forceps or a 'permlok needle'?

Forceps, permalok needles etc.

Dittmer,

You can get the forceps at a medical supply store, possibly at a drug store, or check at the animal health stores or even a vet. They are very common and if you have big flea markets someone has them somewhere.

As for the permalok needle, you can get them from Tandy/The Leather Factory. Check in the larger craft stores, sometimes they have things like that. They run about $1.75 ea or so, and I recommend you get two or three, because those things are great 'hiders'. I find them all over the place because i am bad about laying things done where I finish with them and that might not be the work area.

It looks like you can get both the forceps (aka hemostats) and the permalok needles from ubraidit. I seem to recall DT King (from www.coyotewhips.com) saying that he uses the mosquito hemostat when he does his turks heads.
