INDIANA JONES AND DAVID MORGAN INSPIRED BULLWHIP

When I was making this whip I had the David Morgan Indy whips in mind, mainly the Last Crusade and modern D.M whips which aren't made by Mr. Morgan anymore but sold through his company.

These whips are designed for accuracy and a harder and louder crack. Its action is still quiet fast but not recommended for complex multiple cracking routines due to its weight. Well balanced and easy to use.

LEATHER AND PREPARATION

Only grade 1 Kangaroo hides are used, mainly from Packer Tannery Australia. I grade the hides myself to make sure they have as little defects as possible for a natural product. To give you an idea of how picky I am with the selection I go through approximately 30 hides in order to get 4 that I want to make a whip with.
All the strands are cut wider than the width needed in order to be able to resize them after taking out the stretch. They are bevelled, split and soaped with a homemade compound, then they’re ready to use.

CONSTRUCTION IN ORDER OF ASSEMBLY

Handle – 8”. The handle foundation is made from an aluminium pole, nylon rod and lead weight. The lead weight varies according to the length of the whip in order to get a good balance.
Shot loading – All the whips are shot loaded with a shot spine. It is a flexible spine lined with lead, this is the first layer of the whip that is plaited over. This varies in length and is balanced with the lead weight of the handle and length of the whip.
1st plaited belly – 4 plait.
1st bolster – Kangaroo and cow.
2nd plaited belly – 4 plait.
2nd bolster – Cow.
Overlay – 16 plait finishing with a 6 plait point and 6 half hitches that holds the white hide fall.
Wrist loop – 6 plait checker board pattern (flat).
Turks head – 4 bight, 5 part with 3 passes.
Ring knot – 4 bight, 5 part with 2 pass.
Finish – Leather Gloss.

ACCESSORIES INCLUDED

1 x spare fall
1 x leather dressing
10 x crackers

I like the thicker, straight handle. It makes it look shorter and heavier. I also like the way the thong tapers. It seems to me the taper is slower than in a regular American bullwhip, but it ends in a nice fine point. This helps appreciate the shape of the thong along its length better. It reminds me a bit of the older bullwhips, or even whips like the Loudon wagon whip, having that "Old West" kind of look that sewn cover whips or cowhide bullwhips used to have.

Congratulations!

Aldo.

Thanks a lot for your feedback Aldo! I can't wait to get on with my other whip making projects in the near future. I really like Indy whips and keen to keep working with the design and experiment with other variations.

Wow, how can it get any better than this.

There are no flaws.
