Those lines on the Raiders hat again

I found another example. What's different with this though, is the appearance of the felt between the lines. It looks dusty or compressed or puffed up or something. I doubt the Raiders hat was a new open crown Poet when they got it. My guess it spent a lot of time as a telescope crown hat, or the hat was made with a telescope crown block with a seperate block piece that went on top and stretched or compressed the felt in the area. First I want to say I always love reading you ideas. Your always thinking but I like to Look for the simple answer first. That same line could have been made by a hat that was repeatedly sat on.

I have had that occure on one of mine years back when it was pushed into the corner of a shelf and other items packed around it. Hats are truly funny in this way. One hat will react differently then another and yet originally they were identical -- same fur felt, styling, etc. I guess one could say -- hats are like hair -- sometimes you just have a 'bad hat day :rolling: ! Sorry, couldn't resist. W>

a hat that was repeatedly sat on.
) Deborah Nadoolman was talking about her "Australian model" when she said the Raiders hat was sat on. There was an edit, so she might have switched to talking about a different hat, but ..Did they use that Aussie model? I thought there was a question if that was just "the prototype" or the one in the film... If they didn't use it, and Deb didn't switch hats in the edit .... we don't know if the Raiders hat was sat on.

It's clear to me when I watch her interviews that the hats we see in the fild was sat on by her and Harrison. The Aussie model that she talks about to me is clear that after try many different hat. That she needed a something to use as a raw body. Something that had a lot of crown and brim so she could make a proto-type to show Richard so he could make her the style of hat she wanted. I hope that's clear.

Maybe it was a telescope bash (at least one of them), but wouldn't it have been open before that?

One thing that has always caught my eye was in the opening sequence jungle trek. There is a quick scene where they show Indy from behind and he looks up into the canopy and as he does, you can see that the hat has a very horribly done, deep telescope bash. And even then, it is somewhat misshapen. Food for thought!

Gorak, I looked at that again yesterday- it used to be my screensaver. The main Raiders hat was in Hawaii, that's clear when Ford is putting the hat on in the Waco plane. The replacement Hawaii hat isn't bashed deep on top at the back. I think you see the main Raiders hat in the shot where Ford reaches into his front pocket, and when he grabs the vine to swing out over the river. Yes, this could be the main Raiders hat, partially reverting to a telescope crown. Image - Oildale, some porkpie and teardrops are done by hand, some on blocks with the shape. I've seen such blocks on ebay.

Being one who has had many hats, I have to say thatOak's "simple answer" route is best. Sitting on it makes sense to me. Also, some felt will show signs even after a single brief rebash. I've had it happen to hats that I decided to "just play with." That hat could have just as easily gotten a line like that by sitting overnight with an accidental dent in it, or because of another hat or object laying on it.

so maybe the hat in the picture above was "sat on" and was very crushed and when it was put on for the shot, the persons he's created the inside bump and this eventually gave it those edges that 3thousand sees?
maybe? cuz there is absolutely no denying the shot above.
hmmmmmmmmm....

QFT.

Sometimes when I'm too lazy to put my hats away, they end up getting stacked upside down. Sometimes even after 24hrs there's a slight line there that goes away with a brushing, but it really could be anything.

I have a not-well-supported-by-visual-evidence theory that some shots in Hawaii used stand-ins. Maybe a stand-in fedora was incorrectly reshaped, or was reverting to its original bash. You might be correct; I just don't know enough about fedoras to be helpful. ;)

Well, I haven't been obsessing on telescope lines in years, in fact, the lines I put in my hats have all faded away, I just ran across the hat in the Peruvian pit the other day while looking for styling tips.

I thought it was taken as known that a stand in for Ford was used for some of those "walking through ther jungle" shots during the opening scenes.

It's interesting, but I wouldn't consider it conclusive.

I think people are obsessing and thinking about the small things too much. I know im stepping on toes,sorry..BUT man, what if the hat was.......just a hat? Do you really think the film makers put as much time and effort into all this research as Indy fans do? I mean, they made a hat. They bashed and pinched it. It was worn. They made several of them in different sizes, and distress levels. You cant just sit around obsessing over a small dent or line. That is crazy...lol..What you see in the films is what you get made by many hat makers..plain and simple.

Its like people looking at HJ sr. diary and trying to mimic every single page OR wrinkle..WHY? Just use the stuff and it will wear out on its own..

Yes, you can, and yes, it is. But that's what we do here. (Some of us, anyway.) :TOH:
